This is something that’s been bothering me for months now. Last April me and the missus went to Florida and to treat myself for the endless shopping trips and never ending make up shops I decided the best thing to keep me occupied was to hire a Dodge Challenger RT. Yes, the one with the 5.7litre Hemi.
Upon arriving at our abode for the fortnight the lovely lady security guard asked me if my car had a hemi and the “she gotta get herself some of that”
God bless America!
Anyway, since then my trusty 2010 530D GT just hasn’t had the same appeal. My mate called it an SD1 when I bought it! I’m not thinking about changing until March next year but let’s not hold back on the fun. It’s time to start looking for my V8!
I don’t use my car for work, and putting petrol in it will quickly put an end to the missus stealing it when I am at work so in my head i’m winning! Ideally I want to spend around 20k and achieve 20mpg. The challenger returned 18 mpg us. I don't know what that equates to but the way things are going you won’t be allowed a car like this soon!
The criteria...
Must be V8, preferably non turbo Around 20K Be well built. (All I’ll say is I’ve owned a Land Rover....) 2011 or newer, my GT is a 2010 so I’d like a tad newer And finally it’s gotta sound good.
My current faves are the mustang and the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. Shame they’re both around 30k just now but something tells me depreciation is a curse word!

Easy. Vauxhall (Holden / HSV) Monaro or VXR8. The Monaro is pretty, the VXR8 isn't. Now they don't make them anymore they are only going to go up in value, not down.

don't forget american gallons are smaller and most American fuel is poorer grade, so it wont be quite as bad as the numbers you'd see over there, but our roads aren't hundreds and hundreds of miles of straight 60mph highways, so.. here you go. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E39-540-4-4-V8-6-SPEED-MANUAL/192341244042actually 20k will get you an M5, or even an E9* M3. personally I think i'd go a little older as they were better built and you'll lose less money, especially with an M badge.

That's gorgeous pug, I have been trying to convince my father that an M5 is a much better investment than a motor home.
I'm still thinking more modern though. watched a video of the the turbo V8 5 series GT but it doesn't sound the way I like...

Has to be a AMG C63 or a VXR8, I would say M3 but BMW V8's never sound brutal enough.

Not as modern as you want, But a CLS 55 AMG, but it'll do your budget. I have a W220 S55L AMG KOMP, just went to Leeds and back and it does 20 mpg....but go through the second gate on the pedal. Supercharger and V8 noises. If you get a genuine W220 S55 AMG KOMP, long or not. The prices are holding up well. The non KOMP ones are a bit middling on prices I have noticed.

just a quick comparison, 18mpg US = 22.5 mpg UK
A UK pint is 20 fluid ounces whereas a US pint is only 16.
Since a fl/oz is the same size on both sides of the Atlantic and both have 8 pints to the gallon, a US gallon is only 80% of a British one! Daft but true!
As for advice, I have loads of that! all free and all worth what you pay for it!
My advice is that if you want something that sounds like an American muscle car, buy an American muscle car! go for the Mustang or a Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge. And whilst the Monaro is still holding good money, A LHD Pontiac GTO which is basically the same car can be had for peanuts stateside and your missus won't drive it, for reasons having nothing to do with fuel consumption!

Daresay you wanna be looking for anything with a crossplane crank to get the burble you are actually after too. Anything crossplane and firing order of 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. You won't find that in European metal, they all use flatplane cranks so lack the uneven firing that gives you that rich burble.

I sold my 2010 Chevy Camaro earlier this year, for 20k. 6.2 V8 L.S. motor absolutely awesome car. I had back boxes removed & just fitted two small cherry bomb style jobbies, it made a very good noise. Returned around 20mpg just smoking around & 28 on a run

Ok this rules out anything American. I'd suggest Lexus.

E9x M3 or a Monaro.
The latter will definitely be cheaper to run however.

Monaro is nice. I'm assuming the Vauxhall one is identical to the Holden. Drove my doctor's Holden when he got it new in '02 and rather liked it. Plenty of V8 boogie, six speed manual box that shifted nicely, and gear ratios seemingly designed for interstellar travel (or the autobahn) with fifth and sixth overdriven. It didn't hog the gas when driven sensibly (at 100km/hr in sixth gear it was pulling 1100rpm) but I did once see the onboard computer reading out 40 litres per 100km when he was nailing it in second gear to pass something. Had an off switch for the traction control too which is a bonus if you're that way inclined. Also the power adjustable seats with memory settings for up to four drivers made a nice touch.

I don't know what the going rate for these is in the UK but I have the B7RS4 with essentially the same engine and they sound fantastic.

Have the Swiss Car gestapo not locked you up for owning that yet?? They tried to lock me up for the e39 M5 I had before but they have left me alone in the Audi. I think the Avant helps in looking less like I'm up to no good. That said my wife is racking up the fines in it over the past month as it's in her temporary charge.. The Swiss love their cars. You just have to be very careful where you "use" them. Go to the passes and have fun.
