Up for swaps is my 2003 Saab 9-5 Aero HOT manual Estate, 2.3 petrol turbo 250 bhp.
I took this as a swap on a BMW I was selling a couple of months ago as I’d never had a Saab before. I’ve scratched that itch now and I’m in the mood for a change again. I would accept a cash sale but I’d prefer a swap / close PX.
I put it in for an MOT on Friday and it flew through so now it isn’t due again till 8th November 2018, only advisory being a small oil leak from the sump gasket.
Before I put it in for the MOT I put a pair of Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres on.
I’ve been told that Saabs had a lot of kit inside them, but this must have had just about every option available, perhaps an ex demonstrator? It’s got:
Black leather interior, fronts heated and ventilated / air conditioned, rear bench also heated, electric adjustment in the front, and drivers with 3 position memory
Factory top spec multi speaker audio, touchscreen Nav with 6 disc changer and built in sub in the boot
Dual zone digital climate (currently stuck on a middling sort of temperature)
Electric heated power folding mirrors
Auto dimming rear view mirror
Auto adjusting xenon headlights
Plus the obvious things like 4x electric windows and electric sunroof etc
Interior is in fantastic condition, it has had mats fitted all its life and they have preserved the carpet, the leather is great, the SID display hasn’t lost any pixels, even the flimsy cupholder still works
Externally it looks brilliant in black, almost sinister, factory multispoke 17” wheels in anthracite, no rust save for a small spot coming through on one rear arch and a bleb on the tailgate the size of a £2 coin, this has been treated and shouldn’t get any worse. A friend of mine has had a couple of 9-5s that were newer and had significant rust. It’s fair to say this has been looked after.
It has 160k on the clock and will go up a little as I’m using it most days. It has only had 2 previouse owners and has mostly main dealer service history up until the last year or so. Despite being really powerful it still averages over 30mpg with mixed driving, mid / high 30s is not out of the question on a steady motorway run
Niggles:
The sump gasket is only leaking because of my incompetence – I did an oil and filter change the first weekend I got it and as a precautionary measure decided to drop the sump and check for any deposits or impending blockage of the oil pickup pipe as this is a known issue on some years of Saab – No problems there so I gave everything a clean and reassembled, I didn’t give enough time for the sealant to cure before I started using it again and I haven’t had the time to drop the sump again to remedy this.
The heating is stuck on a (not unpleasant) middle sort of temperature. I’ve not investigated but it can only be the little servo valves I imagine. The positioning still works fine and it clears the windscreen when you want it to. I’ve been happy with the bum-warmers in the seats.
One of the engine mounts on the gearbox side is a bit soggy. A polybushed item is around £35 or a standard part about half that. It’s not a problem; I just know it’s there.
I really can’t think of anything else, it’s an awful lot of Swedish motor and is by far and away the most opulent vehicle I’ve ever owned, now it’s someone else’s turn.
I’m not sure I’m after anything in particular as far as swaps go, just feel free to try me! I’ve had everything from diesel Peugeots to Rotary powered pickups, I just love cars and want to sample them all before I expire!
I’ll get some pictures on here if I can but I have a lot on my phone, if you PM me I’ll send them to you
Vehicle is located in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire

Andy
