My car policey is up next week (Lancaster enthusiasts policy-renewal is £348 for mk3 golf). A mate has an Inca van I’m interested in and Lancaster just quoted me £1231 😱🤦🏻♂️ Who’s best when it comes to vans? A quick online can specialist got me in the region of £650 or so.

Is it Mr Whitewalls van you're buying?
Best quote for my acty by a mile was brentacre - most wouldn't touch it with modifications.

If it's unmodified I would check the regular 'compare the market' types

I have my pick up on a "classic commercial" policy, through one of the brokers (flux or Lancaster or some such. Can't remember.) It is way cheaper than a regular van policy but I'm not allowed to use it commercially/for businesses, 5k mile limit, second car and all that.

Was Lancaster I got the £1200 quote from as I’ve been insured with them a few years. Best quote today £348 through can compare 👍🏻

If you want to modify it, I found it got very tricky.
My 2wd Hilux was £800 fully comp with just Alloys declared and that was the cheapest I could find. Just for comparison, when I replaced it with a 4 year old Golf Gti (mk5) I was paying £308 fully comp with business use.
I think I had my Caddyvan insured standard with tesco for something like £350ish tpft

In my experience insurance is no different to many other products in as much as best & cheap very rarely go together. You gets what you pays

In my experience insurance is no different to many other products in as much as best & cheap very rarely go together. You gets what you pays This is no doubt true, but in many cases like my £300 van, I really only want to be able to drive on the road without being illegal and know that other people will be covered if something happens to them caused by me. Since all my cars have been cheap I've always taken this approach but luckily never had to test it, apart from once where I tested the free breakdown cover with the insurance on my e39. The conversation when I rang them was something like: "Hi, I've broken down at such and such services in Scotland" "Well, mate, we'll take you ten miles to the nearest garage but you're in the middle of nowhere, and it's a bank holiday, so you haven't got a hope I'm sorry. We'll ring you back." [... 3 hours later] "Well it'll be £650 to take you home, if we can find a transporter" [... 2 hours later] "We can't find you anyone, sorry". So this does prove your theory, about best and cheap not going together, apart from then I joined the AA and had a nearly as disastrous time with them. At least they gave me my membership back though. To answer the OP, I found the cheapest van cover with business use through compare the market.
