My son has been on about getting a Lawn tractor since his birthday and one came up locally that was a reasonable price so I bought it. It runs and drives reasonably but I have been wondering if fitting a centrifugal clutch to it might be worth considering. It's got a transmission brake that works a bit but needs adjusting and the throttle is just a normal mower type hand lever. I think there are probably advantages to keeping the current hydrostatic clutch if it was being used off road but for now it won't be doing a lot until he gets used to driving it. All of my attempts at getting him away from the Playstation have failed so I thought this might be worth a go ! So far I have stripped the rusty mower deck off it but had to hide it before he came home from school so I didn't get a decent picture. This is one I borrowed from the net.

Would the change from hydrostatic transmission to centrifugal clutch result in more speed?

It would depend on how small the front pulley was. At the moment it's quite small, not sure if you can get a clutched pulley that small. The transmission brake probably isn't that great so any speed increase would need a better brake really.
As it is you have to set the throttle and release the combined brake/clutch and it's off but the clutch takes a bit of a shove. Was considering keeping the brake and adding a throttle pedal.

Change the throttle from lever to pedal. Any way of just using a clutch and brake separate

I should be possible to fit a clutch pedal on the left hand side but it would have to link over to the original mechanism. I found a forum earlier with a discussion about doing just what I was thinking of. The tensioner pulleys that act as a clutch need to be on the slack side of the belt which is why the lawn tractors have the clutch on the RH side. The brake on this one is operated at the end of the clutch pedal travel so that could be made to be just a brake.
I don't have time to do anything with it before Christmas now but once he has sat on it I will be able to get more of an idea about how well he can reach and press the pedal as it is.
I thought I would ask as a few people have messsed about with similar stuff, thanks for the interest though.

I really don't need this sort of encouragement though ! I ended up fitting a centrifugal clutch and although it worked the pulley on it was too large and it was just too fast. That sounds a bit silly as nothing can be too fast but the gearbox it has means it goes faster in reverse than it does in 1st. A combination of this and the fact the engine revs have to be raised quite a bit meant it was a bit uncontrollable. I've put it back together as it was for now. Re-adjusting and greasing the linkages has made to original clutch work a lot better. I might look to see if I can fit the clutch on the left hand side so it's seperate from the brake.
