Hi Folks Happy New Retro Riding Year! I've been using Valvoline Racing 20W50 engine oil for years in my Mk1 Cortina pre-crossflow and Mk2 Jag engine, but it is getting a bit pricy and as it is designed for "racing" which I don't do, it might be overkill. Are there any recommendations out there for a good quality 20W50 oil? The firm who re-built my Jag engine said any recognised brand of 20W50 would be fine, but that doesn't narrow it down much! thanks folks.

I'll second that, good oil at a reasonable price.

Wilko finest !
(But it’s a crappy old Land Rover !)
Went for the std rather than ‘classic’ oil as didn’t think it would notice.... As a point of interest the classic oil spec and packaging is identical to the halfrauds stuff at twice the price.

Specs at the lower ends can't really be trusted ; they are vague. Sure, it confirms it is an OK but that's about it.
I used to use VR1 and see a nice increase in hot oil presssure.
These days whenever I've used oil for old stuff I've gone with Halfords Classic and Millers 20W50. If it is a special engine then I'll use Millers 20W50 NT. But that is overklil for alot of engines, unless you track your car where it then may be worth going with it.

I work at a rolls royce specialist, we use Morris golden film 20w50 in every thing from the 1920s to 1980s. Seems decent enough!

I use either Halfords or more often Comma 20/50, despite people sayings its curse word in 30 years of using it I've not had any issues

At that price difference it would be the VR1 for me. Just be glad you folks don't own a PD engined Passat or an M-Powered BMW!

Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated. I've managed to find some VR1 for much less than I thought (£27 for 5 litres and much less if you order more!) from www.opieoils.co.uk so I'll stick with what I know.

Always use VR1. Wouldn't use anything else. Worth the extra IMO

IME Opie are comparable to a number of sources and to their credit they are fairly open about what exactly their oils are .

I've always used comma even in the Elan for the last 23 years never had any issues, mind you most of them only do a couple of thousand miles between changes.

FYI you can get oils cheapest if find most of the time on ebay with free delivery .
Seems VR1 can be approaching £50 at a lot of places but only £30 delivered one ebay .
The good thing is i last looked maybe 4-5 years ago for it when i was messing with a pinto and the price has stayed the same .
Happy days .

I used to go off eBay for a few things but unless it's a trusted seller I'm cautious now ; I've been caught out a couple of times on parts now.

Thats from place like Opie oils as above . Quite easy to check them out . It does pay to do your research though as you say .

Many years ago I bought 20W50 from Boyes for about a fiver for five litres.
Quality didn't matter, as the engine would burn off the lot in 500-1,000 miles.
It was a left hand drive 1979 Toyota Corolla 1.3DX Liftback that was into its terminal decline after owning it for 6 years.

I used to go off eBay for a few things but unless it's a trusted seller I'm cautious now ; I've been caught out a couple of times on parts now. Even then... Had an oil change at a Caltex station here. They used 20/50 Halvolene (which is what Caltex sell generally) out of sealed bottles. Once warm, the V8 sounded like a bag of spanners. Had some Castrol in stock, dropped the Halvolene out and refilled it. Not perfect, as I didn't have enough for a full "emergency" change, but better. Then did a full change again with Castrol semi-synth and now you can't hear the engine with the bonnet closed! I've often wondered how 'genuine' that Halvo was.

Even over here there are a few sketchy suppliers. But experience is what makes us learn .

Thanks for the advice and stories folks I ordered in bulk, as I've got two old cars to service and I can't see the price of oil dropping any time soon! Ordered from Opie Oils on Wednesday - arrived on Thursday! £27.23 for 5 litres - bought 8 5 litre cans. Can't say fairer than that! cheers R
