Getting more power out of a 1.1 OHV Ford.

I'm just talking theoretically (I understand this wouldn't be financially viable or the best way to get horse power)... but, what could you do to a 1.1 ohv 'Valencia' engine to gain more power?

I've seen a few youtube videos lately of people getting 140-160bhp out of Mini engines with small turbos and oversized pistons. To be fair the 160bhp mini did have a supercharger but, it got me thinking. 

I'm just curious to if anyone body ever did this back in the day? The only evidence i can find on the internet is:

I'm guessing you could use this cylinder head and a Weber carb to get a bit more? Maybe a better manifold/exhaust... i know nothing about turbos.

Its not something i really know much about but, i thought it would be an interesting take on jazzing up an old 1.1 Escort... if money was no object etc.

Pop it in the nearest bin, and drop in an XR2 crossflow if you're desperate for that look.

2.0Zetec in bike carbs with lairy cams and megasquirt will see 200bhp for a similar price to tuning the old OHV unit.

If you can find the bits (rare) there was a Fiesta 1.1X which had a twin choke carb, and freeflow exh mani, not sure if there was anything else. We did have a crab but sold it several yaers ago, I've never seen another.

Thats assuming you want to stick to the 1.1

Yeah thats the kinda thing i would do if i was going to do an engine change... probably a 1.6 Zetec like everyone else, I just started this thread to see if anyone maybe back in the day did something with the original low powered engines but, as i said originally its not what i intend on doing. Just interested to see if anyone had done anything or seen anything like that.

My 1.3 HCS had bike carbs... Think I've still got them somewhere as I converted it back to stock when I sold her!

Get more air in and out as fast as possible.

Bang for buck, you're looking at another engine.

Not sure how closely related that engine is the the old crossflows but I'm sure the lower capacity crossflows must have been used in certain racing classes back in the day. Depends on how easy it is to get bits. If there's a better cam, maybe form a higher capacity version of that engine then that could be a good way forward along with bigger carbs and free flowing exhaust. To go forced induction I'd imagine you'd be making a lot of the parts yourself so probably not worth going in that direction. As above, easier to go for a bigger unit

I mentioned this somewhere else recently but I think the 1100 had a differently designed head to the larger capacity engines. Something to do with the port spacings but it might cause an issue if you get a new inlet manifold. My Mum had a 1.1 Fiesta and I learnt to drive in that. That only had a four speed gearbox but due to the gearing it was actually quite nice to drive.

If you built it with the right gearing and a 5 speed box you might get a similar effect. I imagine fitting a turbo and making it rev a bit might be fun.

The Valencia (957, 1117, some 1300ish cc-age) was different to the Kent (1300ish, 1585IIRC) in quite a few respects, only three main bearings being the biggest one. Tuning one sounds like an interesting idea on paper, especially considering some of the screaming 1200 pre-crossflow Anglias from the olden days, but in reality I think it would be a lot of expense and a lot of work for an engine that would be destined to have a very short lifespan. An FWD Kent crossflow from a mk1 Supersport or XR2 would be a much better base to start from if you really wanted it to look old-school in a way that a CVH just doesn't. Zetecs are also crazily tuneable, and you can get BDA-style rocker covers for them now...

Back in the late 80's, I had a Mk1 Escort 1100 X-flow and FOC access to my Sisters boyfriends engineering shop. Rather than swap out the motor for a 1300, I had the std lump lightened, fully balanced with a small over bore. They reprofiled the cam and I fitted a twin choke weber and 4 branch from a 1300. It revved like nothing I've had since and from a standing start, would cream my friends 1600 Harrier up to about 50mph before he could pass me. Oldskool tuning - you can't beat it!

Ghetto turbo conversion, throw a couple of head gaskets on to lower compression, Renault 5 gt turbo carb with a smaller main jet and air corrector jet than standard, custom exhaust manifold to fit the smallest turbo you can find and run really low boost.

I didn't know about the crankshaft. I wanted to buy it from my Mum and planned on fitting a 1300 although a 1600 would have been nice. I bought a Mk2 XR2 after a couple of other cars but didn't like it as much as I hoped. It had plently of grunt (for me at the time) but the engine wasn't great. I always wondered what a crossflow would have been like.

Is it the same engine series as is in the Ka? There used to be Turbo kits available for them. Van Aaken I think the company was.

Also Ford developed that engine into the 1.6 in the Sport/Street Ka.....so there must be options.
