Hello, Little bit of house keeping. The forum has adverts, I'd love if it could live without them, but it can't really, so that is what it is. However doing some analytics on the site it looks like it can live with less adverts and still pull in the same money that it does. To that end I've enabled Google's Auto Ads which will apparently intelligently work out where to place what ads for maximum efficiency. Now this makes me a little nervous as previously I could say "right this advert goes here, that advert goes there" etc. and I have control. Now that placement is being done automatically. I'm not sure if it changes on a user by user basis either, so keep an eye and tell me if they are objectionable. Content of ads is mainly up to your own browsing habits (although I have noticed we're getting more proper car related ads on here which is nice, seems they have worked out what we're about!). I'm hoping that Google's recent changes they've made to curb display of objectionable adverts will finally stop the problematic adverts they have on their network. Anyway it is one of those behind the scenes type topics, but I thought I'd keep you all in the loop.

There's currently a Halfords advert at the bottom of the screen. I'm not sure if I object or not hehe!

Is it just me, but adverts aren't showing on this forum for me?

Hell fire... Can't believe they allow that on their as network given how puritanical they can be, particularly as I have all the risky categories disabled (family forum and all that).
For anyone curious it was an advert for socks that had a naked woman.

To be fair it didn't pop up here, I just thought it was kinda funny.

Thanks HoTWire. If it helps adverts appear to be placed at the top of the screen below the bar with log in button, and down the page in some, but not all signature fields. Also sometimes there’s one across the page at the very top or bottom of the screen with a click twistie that makes them retract when clicked. There’s also some large blank spaces on the pages in the posts. Subject matter has been random with some car specific stuff. Hope that’s of use.

Thanks for the info folks, still fiddling with settings on it, so reports of obnoxious placement still gratefully received. We seem to be having less ads based on this automatic system, so let's see how that goes.

Have just turned Adblock off as I was feeling deprived - wanted to see what I was missing Nothing intrusive or noteworthy yet

Okay, so Auto Ads have decided to lose their mind... or maybe a change I made did a bad thing. Either way I'm going to do some more fiddling and testing on what is possible and what works (some times even prominent ads don't actually work well and all they do is annoy folks).
Context for doing this stuff: The extra cost from doing the image hosting is now out stripping the income we get from ads and ebay referrals, which is a little problematic. I'd hoped to have a solution by now that wasn't ads based, but so far nothing that I'm comfortable with, or that would make for a better community.

I generally run adblocker on my laptop but not the iPad/phone. The annoying thing about randomly placed ads on the iPad, is the screen jumping you often get, resulting in clicking on some irrelevant ad. The “smart ads” are generally not very smart at all IME - Tonight, I have these ads showing I don’t have a website or a store, I don’t need one, nor have I looked at having one I’m a contractor in a fairly niche market so I don’t look for jobs online: And I have a beard 🧔

Just hope the ads don't get too big! Phone crashes with far too many forums now when they try to broadcast video or just too many ads for it to handle.

Where we're at now would be the maximum, I'm guessing if you are using the mobile site you'll only see one ad at the bottom of the pages. I'm still fiddling, it is a little frustrating the gap between when I want to do on the right hand column on listings pages and what is available to do in the proboards software (but that is true for nearly all forum software).

I 'm really not a fan of the ad's between posts, (or ads in general) and whilst I do have an ad blocker I try not to have it turned on on here...
But, is there a way in ProBoards to allow ad's for some members and not for others? I know on other forums there is the option to pay up and not have adverts, or use for free but have ads. I'd be happy to chuck some money in the pot to have ad's turned off and not have to resort to an blocker.

The ads tend to appear between the penultimate and last post. Today i mistakenly thought the ad signified the end of the thread so missed the last comment I have turned adblocker on but will turn it off if the ads go

Today i mistakenly thought the ad signified the end of the thread so missed the last comment I'll sort that out now, it was one of the positions that I was least sure of. I have turned adblocker on but will turn it off if the ads go Well you can turn off adblocker when the forum is closed then, no way I can afford to pay for the site now days without the ads.
