I decided to venture out to Silverstone this weekend, to see the inaugural rallycross meeting at this new track. The weather dominated the day, very cold and horizontal snow for most of the morning.
First impressions, the track is not as good as Lydden Hill and the main grandstand is quite a long way from most of the action. Positives, they parked all the cars in the paddock area (nice hard standing and close to the action), the café in 'The Wing' was open so you could try and get warm, and it didn't take an hour to get out of the car park like it did at Lydden.
This was the first round of the British Rallycross Championship for 2018, but being as Silverstone will also host a round of the World Rallycross Championship in May this year, some of the World Rallycross teams had turned up for a sneaky practice.
The championship also has a retro rallycross division which had about 9 entries.
A couple of minis
A MK1 Escort
A MK3 Gartrac Escort 2wd
A Chevette
A MK2 Astra
A Beetle
And a MK1 MR2
Racing was fairly close given that the track was very wet in places, but reliability played a big part in the results.
Lots of sideways action from the RWD cars in the cold snowy conditions.
Some of the super modifieds were great creations, Honda S2000 powered RWD Vauxhall Corsa, Longitudinally mounted V6 Renault Clio with transaxle, Audi tt Quattro TDi and a Vauxhall VXR
And just for balance some photos of the big boys.
I also took a few bits of video on my phone.
Retros first
Then British Championship Supercars
And finally some world rallycross cars mixing it with the brits.
