HIllman brake flares - what type? (and best type of tool?)

Hi,

I need to replace at least one of the brake pipes on my Super Minx and I'm planning on buying a tool to do it, because I feel like it's a useful bit of kit to have anyway.

Struggling a bit to find out what sort of tool is best for occasional home use, and see a few recommendations for this type:

And I'm 99% sure that on my car they are SAE flares - can anyone confirm? Looking at pictures I'm positive it's these.

I just use a simple die set to make double flares for copper lines. Its a cheap 2 piece tool but good once you get used to it.

Hi, Yes they will be SAE type flares. I've used the Moprod version of that commercially until splashing out on a Sykes Pickavant cam action tool, so it will be just what you want. Oh and use Kunifer rather than copper lines.

Definitely use Kunifer. I'd also try and source OEM nuts or equivalent for putting on the brake lines. IME I've almost always had the lines bind on steel/whatever nuts/unions the copper pipes are supplied with due to a reaction with the two dissimilar materials.

I guess good quality brass fittings from Automec or similar are my best bet?

I've used that tool and it's good, easy to use on the car as it's quite compact, however to get best results you will need something to cut the pipe correctly so this kit is good as it's got the cutter included....

Thats the kit i have. As you say, easier to use off the car but gets good results with single or double flares

For cutting the pipe, use a proper tool. Plumbers merchants often have cheap mini-cutters. I think my last one cost under a fiver.

Haven't got round to ordering the bits yet, I see kits with a little pipe bender and cutter for about a tenner so I think I'll try one of them and see if it works well.

Going to have to pull my finger out though, crossmember will be going back in soon, gonna need some brake pipes!

After faffing around with the 'cheap' tools I could never get a proper flare.
Tube keeps slipping in the clamp types.
