Sorry to see your pride and joy like this - glad you were able to fix it, even if it required a lot of effort.
I've never used a car wash myself. Not the company car (which gets an annual wash) or the wife's jalopy. It's kind of therapeutic and rewarding.

Not good, although I do struggle to have any sympathy with anyone using a car wash, be it manual or the automatic ones. Who can’t wash their own car? I'm semi disabled (walk with a stick), my daily, 2018 Karoq, goes to the local car wash as it hurts like hell to clean it and its a consumable, like a fridge, they do a great job for £6. My toys I take a lot of time over myself and in Spring they get the works over 2-3 days, muck doesn't stick, there is wax, sealant, and nanotech on them. (and doing it hurts like hell). Ok yeh I get it, but even you’ve pretty much said it, you wouldn’t take a mk1 escort to ‘the wash’

Not good, although I do struggle to have any sympathy with anyone using a car wash, be it manual or the automatic ones. Who can’t wash their own car? I loathe cleaning cars - and to do it properly takes hours. Just seems like a major waste of time... I just run out with a sponge when it starts raining so Mother Nature can do some of the job for me!! Maintaining & attempting to improve 3 cars and 1 bike is already a challenge while having some kind of life balance No, it doesn’t take hours, if it took hours you wouldn’t be sat at a car wash about 10 mins. It’s just lazy that’s all plain & simple. You pretty much summed that up yourself by saying ‘ it just seems like a mayor waste of time’ It’s the ‘can’t be arsed’ world of today

I find washing and polishing my cars very satisfying And often spend a few hours after a curse word day at work unwinding doing it, always makes me feel better

I am of the way that I will only wash it myself mostly at home, or before a show at a jet wash. I used to work as a valeted and some of the products we used are so dangerous. We had a ten year old BMW come in which had had a 1K respray... You can see where this is going. Paint literally started to melt when the lads washed it, and no TFR used!

I'm in the can't be arsed brigade! If I have the half hour it takes to wash the car properly, i'd rather be out thrashing it round the lanes, let alone the 2 hours to wax it!
Every now and then (or before a show) I get it done by a local valeter who really knows his job (think he has OCD) otherwise, I throw an occasional bucket of water over it when it gets too muddy! SWMBO's daily goes to the quickiewash about 4 times a year and comes out OK, but the one we use is nearer a tenner and do a great job. Even so, I won't take my retro there!
But i'm starting to pay the price! I had the car painted in 2012, not a posh expensive respray, but a once over in the original colour to make it ALL one colour instead of 19 different shades of one colour! but now it's flat and lifeless and waxing it only brings it partially back. I'm afraid to get it mopped as I don't think the paint is all that thick! And (of course) it's piggin RED!
And let's face it, i'm FAR too idle to spend 2 or 3 days compounding it by hand then another couple of days building the wax up with repeated layers, something I should have done when the paint was fresh!

I've been there with my 944 Turbo; Took it the local place for a £5er during winter and thought "it can't be that bad". Well, it can! Tesco used to use AG products and give a resonable result, albeit for £10.
I did write a guide on how to wash a car easily and quickly but here is a cut-down version:
1) have a wash-mitt, decent shampoo, a bucket, a decent hose/pressure washer supply and a large Microfibre drying towel. The Mitt will save a ton of time over a normal sponge, and also keep your hand warm! A win-win! 2) Hose off all of the loose dirt; a pressure washer helps massively here, even the local Asda/Morrisons item. With the pressure washer, just be careful around iffy paint, seals and parking sensor. (i.e keep your distance from them). 3) Fill up the bucket of water and clean the car. There is no need to scrub like mental here; just clean the car gently 4) Rinse the above off. 5) Dry off using the towel; This IMHO makes a huge difference to the cleaning time. A chamois will take ages and IMHO leave not that much of a better result, if any. My drying towel is dual surfaced (I can use both sides) and is A2 sized if I am guessing. Meguiars sell one but mine was from the Chemical Guys at a show. It's one of the best things I've bought for cleaning the car. I do also have a basic one from Halfords; it's not as good as the CG item but it's still a decent time saver.
With the above I cleaned my 2CV yesterday at Morrisons pressure washer yesterday in 15-20 mins tops and that was minging! 5 minutes of that was spent with a pressure washer under the wheelarches; I'm sure half of Stafford came out of them!
If you polish and wax the car with something decent like Collinite 476S it will make a massive difference to your cleaning power and cleaning time ; i.e the dirt will fall off. Unless the paintwork is horrific you can genenrally DA a car with a decent polish in around 40-50 mins tops with a DA polisher and something like Meguiars 205.
I ended up doing the above with the Saab this way. It taught me alot from doing a 'quick' job.

I used to do the whole, pre wash, iron out, tar removal, 2 bucket method, clay bar, wash again, dry, rotary polish, seal, wax blah blah blah...
Then one day, I just stopped caring, I've not washed any car in over a year in my household.. I just let them fester.
Shame as I was once really into detailing, even wanted to start my own business doing it.... guess I got lazy in my old(ish) age.

I was almost as bad Roach! These days it's about two things for me 1) Keep the car looking OK 2) Keeping the paintwork good enough and rust free 3) Keeping the underside rust free. Otherwise I'd be worse. I only wash my cars once a month when I daily them, sometimes even every 2 months at best!

I have started to take a bit more care with cleaning my cars, albeit its a quick blast off with the pressure washer, then run over with sponge and pressure washed off. There's only one hand car wash i'd use near me, Olly's Posh Wash in Orpington, been around for decades so long before the supermarket/eastern Europeans started up.

It's not only the scrub and rub folk at fault. A friend took his then new Toyota compressor for its 6 month first service to the main dealers. They did a courtesy wash with the same results. Ended up with a spray job on a vertically new car!

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault

Unfortunately, this is the result of paying practically nothing for someone to wash your car. It isn't your fault, but it is a lesson learned...
Best to try and look for a local detailer and see what's a good price for you. That way you will be more than likely to get a pucka job, than have a mess left on your car like you have here.
The only time I ever think it's ok to use an automatic car wash or any sort of cheap car washes is if your car is literally a 'white good' to you.

I've used them out of laziness and got the same result, just don't go back. I use the van wash in work normally, just don't use the soap with tfr in. As the old saying goes if you want something doing...

As the old saying goes if you want something doing just grab some snacks and watch a box-set. The urge will pass.

It did look amazing at the end and I would get people asking me constantly how I get my car so shiny and can I do the same to theirs etc. Now, on the rare occasions I can be bothered to do them, they get a quick wash (still two buckets - I’m not an animal ) and a quick going over with a spray sealant. I cringe when I look at the massive collection of waxes, polishes, glazes, sealants etc I have and what they’ve cost me. Nice to see you’ve got your Escort sorted Retrotoe
