Peugeot 205 brake pipes - A difficult task?!

Hello all.

I have a 205 that failed its MOT on the rear brake pipes/hoses being perished or being near to perishing.

When I asked if this was an involved job to remedy I was told it might be but then again it might not be!!!

If the pipes come out cleanly it will just be a case of replacing the pipes but if they do not it could involve chopping the pipes out and fiddling about getting the news ones in, changing the calipers or other bits and pieces or maybe worse! It all sounds like it could be quite a headache and then some...

I'm in no doubt that this is an essential job but have any of you folks had experiences (both good and/or bad!!!) with having this done on a little old 205?!

I hope not to hear too many horror stories but if I do it will steel me in readiness for the worst!!!

Hi, They're right it could go easy or it could be a PITA but any competent mechanic or garage will be able to deal with it. They are just trying to warn you that the bill could be a william.

even redoing the whole lot wont cost you much in parts, itll take a roll and a bit to do a two line diagonal split car such as a base model or a 1.9, so thats anout £24, rear hoses are dirt cheap, less than £20 also, and a tenner of brake fluid.

You say perishing so are they on about the flexible hoses. Pipes usually fail on corrosion.

This is a job that I would always consider to be an important one as braking is pretty ruddy essential to say the least!!!

I am just worried it will end up costing so much it might be quite prohibitive...

Even if it was a free car unless its a total basket case then anything you spend on the brakes is worthwhile.

It sounds like the flexible hoses are going.

One thing I'd say is when doing them try not to disturb the union on the hard brake pipe itself. On remade copper pipes I've almost always had it where the pipe seizes onto the union, and the union will twist the pipe, making your job bigger than anticipated!
