I am trying to find some history about my BMW Alpina B3 3.3. I beleive that it used to be the UK press car wearing B3 BMW as the number plate. I got hold of a V888 form and have sent this to the DVLA three times now. Every time it is returned to me with a standardised letter telling me that they cant help. Something to do with the 'reason' for wanting this information. Has anyone sucessfuly got hold of this sort of information from them since May 25th this year. I have heard that GDPR (new regulations for personal data) is stopping the DVLA releasing any information at all. I'm getting fustrated..... Any ideas and for your trouble have a picture of an Alpina BMW: R

A simple HPI check should reveal whether it had worn a different number plate earlier in its life.

Correct - just wanting the history of your car is no longer a good enough reason for the DVLA to release details of previous owners, unfortunately. For the same reason the new V5 doesn't show the name and address of the previous keeper. I *think* it was something about not having the specific permission of those previous keepers to provide their details to you, so it's easier all round to just refuse.

Some time last year DVLA stopped giving copies of all of the previous V5 when you submitted a V888 - allegedly because of the new data protection regs but more likely because of the hugely labour intensive workload versus cost.

From the Jan 18 FBHVC newsletter
DVLA are no longer able to provide the registration history of a vehicle for research purposes in response to a V888 request. This was discussed further with DVLA who confirmed that the advice they received as a Government Agency was that this disclosure of personal data will not be permitted under the General Data Protection Regulation and thus they have no choice in the matter. This is in line with FBHVC’s understanding of the Regulation and while the demise of this service is a regrettable loss to the historic vehicle community, it is unfortunately unavoidable

The system I use at work shows all previous plates. I can check if you want?

V888 got nerfed in September last year as part of the new GDPR
previous keeper on V5 has also been nerfed.
i think the only scenario they will release information is if you were the previous keeper (as before) but info from when you were the keeper. not entirely sure how thats even useful. alzheimers?
