Hello guys if you read my post about moving the ball joint shaft you know I'm working on my w124 merc, well basically the pinch bolt that was on the car is part threaded and unfortunately whilst removing the old ball joint I had to smash it out and now need a new one , I rang Mercedes up and to be honest the guy doesn't have a clue on what's I'm on about so I went to my local hardware shop and can get a same size bolt but its fully threaded, now can I use a fully threaded bolt or would I need a part threaded bolt and is there a reason why it is part threaded , all help appreciated in advance.

You need to use a shanked bolt. A fully threaded bolt is not suitable. Most motor factors, especially GSF and Euro Car Parts will be able to supply you a 'selection box' of suitably graded shanked bolts in various sizes for suspension pinch bolts. provided it isnt some obscure bolt 8" long or something this would be the best bet, that way you have a supply of bolts for future fettling.

Thanks rich so the correct term for the suspension / ball joint bolts is shank bolts ? Il try euros or gsf and get those , the bolt is only 2"-3" so hopefully get it done properly, just surprised how mercs are clueless and even with pictures they still telling me they don't know about it and try selling me a kit for the control arm bushes

Hi, Terminology first, a bolt is part threaded and a set screw is fully threaded. In your application you need a bolt because the shank or unthreaded part is helping to locate the stud of the joint. If you use a set screw and it comes loose the stud can chaff or fret the threaded part because it has less material and allow the stud to pass by. A set screw is inherently weaker because the thread reduces the effective diameter of the fixing and is a stress riser for fatigue.

Lots of cars use them, like Vw and Ford so may be you could get one elsewhere other than Mercedes.

Just get a 8.8 hex or 12.9 caphead (with an allen head) in the right length and diameter. You may have to get one longer than you actually need and cut it down to get the shank/threaded part the right lengths but it will be strong enough to do the job.
These are the most common bolts out there so you will have no trouble getting them. Try eBay.

Thanks guys just ordered one luckily got a part number and called a different Mercedes dealers from the one I was trying and they confirmed then have or in stock so all is good, it helps talking to the right person, thanks again for all the help guys
