Another insanely useful post sir! I called over there and my buddy said- "Dude, it's not a Holley- it's an Edelbrock" haha! It was literally out of the box new when we started the other engine with it. It was just basically sitting outside, under the bonnet. It was stuck and dry. I probably should have done the whole thing, but I understand what you're saying about a rebuild not solving much.
I'll find out the size of it. The timing is also suspect because we don't know the cam- therefore I have no idea where the timing is supposed to be set. 13 deg BTDC? Pshh, we didn't connect a light to it because of that. We just turned the distributor to the sweet spot where it runs the best. Any more either way and it goes to pot.
I can keep it running just fine if you raise the RPM's. It will idle on it's own, but it's way too high. When a motorcycle runs like this, we call it "plugged slow jet" Or a plugged idle circuit. On this giant aluminum brick, I'm not even sure if it has main jets and idle jets like a bike carb. Heck- I thought it was a Holley haha I will do more research on that. I won't rebuild an old, used carb either- Usually they're cheap enough to just toss it away, but this one was unused before I pumped fuel to it last month.
The timing trick, with strong Vacuum- LOVE THAT. It's a tip I shall always remember.

The carb is a 550 size. I've got a bunch of parts coming in later tonight- I'll go over there tomorrow and see what I can figure out.

I watched the YouTube vid...that thing has a lot of cam overlap. Looking forward to seeing how it drives. Any idea what the compression ratio might be? Normally with a lot of cam you go high on compression.
I think the first drive is going to be fun!

Did the rebuild on that carb. Waste of time, just like you said. It actually stuck the floats and flooded the cylinders after I did it. I think the WD40 I sprayed on the float needle to clean them off caused the rubber tips to swell. Probably. I have HOURS in that thing from first time I saw it. That carb is in the bin. So- I took a known good carb from another engine and put THAT one on it. Runs and idles! It lopes from the cam, it sounds great actually. It idles around 800 rpm, near as I can tell. We didn't connect a tach because I didn't have one. Looks like around 6 inches of vacuum at an idle. We will dial in the fuel screws and time it with this gauge next. Again- thanks you guys because Carb stuff does not feel like a mystery anymore.

Waiting on first drive. I have a feeling that it is going to really wake up at over 4000 rpm.

Lots of scratches on this paint job. It had sat in several garages for nearly a decade AFTER paint. Also, the paint job itself, is total curse word. Several different shades of green, varying degrees of wet sand and polish, prepwork fails around the windshield, doors- all over the place actually. It can always get a re-spray if it turns out to be a good truck for the guy. We're guessing the 327 bored .30 over, stroker engine with all the parts on it, should make around 435-450HP. But that's based off my Beer Can Dyno. Test drive will occur, while sitting on a milk crate.

Been there with the carb thing. they can be as frustrating as anything else can be frustrating...only a little more!
progress looks good!

Ok- So GET THIS: He brought me a new carb today. You know, to replace his plugged up Edelbrock. He brought a brand new HOLLEY 650 DOUBLE PUMPER! No need for that thing, but it sure looks cool. I worked on steering, the carb- yes it runs, have to turn some screws, didn't seem like it ran as good as the one I just took off. We'll mess with it at the weekend.

OK, since you are back on the Holley train!
That is a nice carb for that engine. Glad he did not go bigger than 650.
The Holley has a "Power Valve" ( NOT the same as an accelerator pump) The purpose of the power valve is to dump fuel into the engine when the vacuum goes low ( like when you stomp on the pedal). Power valves come with different vacuum ratings. IF you have the wrong power valve, it will interpret your low idle vacuum as a demand for more fuel and just keep pouring the stuff in.
The other thing about power valves is that they hate backfires. A good carb backfire can break the thing.Bad mileage is the first hint.
You get it our for a burnout drive yet?

I'm still waiting on what's called a Z Bar for the clutch. It's like a bellcrank that pushes the clutch release arm. Can't find them new anywhere, so we've got one coming from Fleabay. It's not going to move until that gets here We have the carb running a much better vacuum. It's like in the 10-14 range, at an idle of about 1200 RPM and that's just a guess. We've timed it with vacuum and sound. It's REALLY smooth now, smells right. When you sit in it, start it cold and use the choke, then let it warm up a bit- it seems like all those old Broncos I had with the manual choke and big 4BBL carbs. I think we've got it! Still needs? A real driveshaft- I welded together old rusty bits to use as a "in and out of the garage only" shaft. We will have one made for it before the road test. It needs the steering column properly secured, the parts are on the way. It needs the power steering pulley, the lines are connected. A final bleed of the brake system. Also needs the accelerator pedal assembly. The wrong one was sent out. And then for completion? LOTS of interior and trim bits. My main concern is getting it to go through the gears and make it safe & reliable. It's sooo close now!

Yes it is. I'm doing a Durango swap for a buddy- he loves them and sent this one over! I'll do more pics and a thread on it today.
Super amazing that I finally have all the trucks in one place, AND a spot big enough for all of them. Did I mention that there is another Coyote engine and trans being delivered soon? No? That's gonna be an interesting project.
I'd better get out there and get a couple of these things DONE!

Ok- back to this 65 Chevy truck- I DROVE IT OUT OF THE GARAGE YESTERDAY! It moves.
It's shown several minutes into this video, if you want to hear it. It's a 4 speed manual, it's positively MENTAL!

The whine of those timing gears, sounds like a supercharger! I thought for sure the clutch disc was going to explode the first time I released the pedal- But it didn't. This thing is pretty badass.
