First post, seems like the correct thing to do in order in introduce myself! Purchased in May. Mainly worked on the internals for the summer (new distributor, timing sorted etc), then a quick tidy of the interior until I save up the money for a full refit next year. Bodywork hopefully being sorted over the winter before a respray. But for now, her she is... My Giulia!

Don't look too closely though, or you'll see the sills need respraying, the arches have split and that I've got gorilla tape holding the glovebox shut

A major family bereavement has meant that I haven't had time (or money) to spend on doing much to the Giulia over the past few months, but today I finally got back on it. I've been bugged by this weird split on the driver side wing that just looks really strange. I thought the wing was metal, but because of the strange 'split' I have been worried that perhaps the whole wing is just curse word plastic or something... So I had a bit of time today to finally get at it and take a look. And errm... There's about 8mm of filler over some strange cuts... It looks like someone has attached it with a bread knife. I just can't work out why/how someone would have done that? And also, how they thought that just whacking a curse word load of filler on top was a good idea. Other than that, the rest of the body isn't in too bad of a shape actually. Sills and floorpans *appear* to be solid. So I've just got a few holes - and slash marks - to deal with... Tomorrow I'll attack it with a sander and really get under the skin!

Love the car, is the weird rear arch cut evidence of a poorly fitted wheel arch repair panel? Looks like evidence of welding towards the back??

Yeah, the rear panels have been done but that cut is in one of the originals. It almost looks like someone attacked it witha Jigsaw and then thought better of it half-way through.
Either way, it's getting patched/replaced.

Took advantage of the sun to spend some decent time on the Giulia this weekend. The weird slash marks - which do appear to be the result of somebody cutting in to widen the arches for the 15" Alfaholic alloys - have been welded up and will be made flush. So that's something. The bad news though, is that the front left fender/headlight area is knackered. Completely so. It means that we can't weld against a world of filler and curse word, so the replacement front valance panel I bought sits, unable to be fitted. And despite there being a couple of right-hand-side panels on the internet (for over €700!!) there are literally NO left-hand-side panels available. So now we sit and consider our options...

Such a beautiful car. Hope you get the wings sorted, someone was very brave/stupid to try do that to such a car! Look forward to seeing this at some point 👌🏽

That cut looks to me like someone cut it to make it easier for them to pull / roll the arch outwards to allow clearance for the wheels. Absolute hack job though, and to leave the cuts there as a void with just filler on it was never going to last long.

Yeah - I think that's EXACTLY what's happened. But to do it like that is just awful. I just wish that was the main issue here - but that front wing is impossible to locate, literally none available everywhere, so it's going to be an interesting few weeks trying to work out what to do. In other news, I did manage to find an original 1970s Alfa Romeo windscreen vinyl/sunshield sticker, so you know... Swings and roundabouts!

That is an absolutely brilliant motor. Can't beat a 105 series Alfa.

Still haven't worked out what to do...
Was offered a decent price for the car in it's current state and the sensible thing would be to get shot of it. BUT I JUST CANT!

Why don't you measure the size of the headlight , say its 6" , and find a old car that has the same size and sort of recessed headlight and buy a wing from what ever that might be [ old jag etc ] and use that to repair the headlight area ? It might have the same or similar curves so make its much easier and may be very cheap .
If you could find a wing I'm guessing they would want silly money [ £500 ] plus , and do you really want that ? And if you did would you want to use that when teh rest of the car is only ..ok .
I'm guessing you want to use it thats why you bought it and not do a full nut and bolt resto so why not just have a go and , you have nothing to loose.

I completely forgot to say the most important bit in my previous post... Your car is looking really great! I can see why you don't want to make the 'sensible' decision. I'd say with the wing, if you can weld then try breaking it down into simpler sections . If it's just the headlight recess area then it looks to me like a flat shape for the recess, then make a circular 'band' to weld to it. If you have a little mig welder then I'm sure you could practice making some test ones until you get it nailed. Alternatively you may find a body shop / restorer who'd tackle the metal work for you which wouldn't be so costly as the full repair with paint. Given that the car will need paint from your current repairs. Don't lose heart, I'm sure you can figure it out!

Been a while, so thought I should update. But first, thanks for all of the kind comments; it's never great to come across a money pit, especially when you can only afford to do things 'on a budget', so enthusiasm and support go a long way!
The good news is that I actually found a replacement left-hand-side front wing from a guy in Australia for just a 'few hundred' pounds. So with that and a couple of panels from Classic Alfa, I think I may be 'back in the game!'
