Lead sulfate is a result of the battery charge and discharge process, it's what is created when sulphuric acid reacts with lead plates then builds up on the lead plates and reduces the battery capacity. It can be reversed via a delsufator but takes a while. Does your charger have this facility or is it just a warning?

It says desuphater-charger on the label, seeing as it's optimate I'd think it's doing something clever before it charges the battery along the lines of what you you said  |

I have a newer version by Optimate, that has a desulphate mode - all automatic. The flashing lights tell you what it's doing - not what it wants you to do  From memory it tries to charge at 12v as normal, if the battery is "dead" (sulphated ?) it tries at higher voltage (18v ?), if needed a quick burst even higher (24v ?) The idea is to force some life into the battery by clearing the sulpher from the plates, then it charge it as normal. All clever stuff.  |

Picked up some Epsom salt today going to try to reinvigorate some very sulphated batteries I have here. Have 2 smart chargers too so a combo of this.

Have 2 smart chargers too so a combo of this. ^ Don't underestimate the old non-smart chargers. Some smart charger do nothing until they sense a battery connected, and they may not sense a stone dead battery. I found connecting a dumb old charger overnight is sometimes needed before a smart charger starts doing anything. |

Picked up some Epsom salt today going to try to reinvigorate some very sulphated batteries I have here. Have 2 smart chargers too so a combo of this. Or a substance called EDTA, which if my memory works is ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid. In says gone by you could get it in little tubes of tablets. Batt Aid, maybe, or something like that, much derided anyway, except it actually worked very well at reviving old or sulphated batteries. Used to be you could buy it in powder form from specialist chemists, which was far better, wouldn't dare try that now if I were you. Not worth the risk of an early morning visit from the terrorist unit, it's also used to treat heavy metal or radiation poisoning. Excuse me Sir, is that a dirty bomb you're making etc, |

I've got an 800mA dumb charger that's perfect for it, an hour with that on and my Lidl smart charger which will sense upwards of 7.5v (my Aldi one only does 10v+ - though the Aldi one says CHA when it's on maintain, the other one just shows the voltage it's maintaining). How long do you reckon is needed to desulphate a year old battery that went dead after 6 weeks and was dead for a couple of months? I keep them under my work bench off the ground |

90% of the time car batteries die due to sulphation or the results there of. The plates inside a battery are made of a matrix of lead and antimony. If you over charge a battery or fast charge it regularly,you run the risk of bending the plates. If it's severe enough,they bend enough,and they short out,hence the beginning of a "dead cell" in a battery. You can get rid of the lead sulfate that forms on the plates by basically burning it off electrically,what supposedly smart chargers do. What. They don't tell you,is this dislodged material falls to the bottom of the battery . When you over charge a battery and bend the plates,this also dislodges material from The antimony plate,and this too,falls to the bottom of the battery. You only get away with it so long,before all this dislodged material shorts out the bottom of the plates and it's bye bye baby,bye bye...More expensive batteries with long guarantees have the plates enclosed in a Mylar type envelope to stop this material shorting out with the plate next to it......Or so I was lead to believe by an Engineer who worked for Bosch.

They're not bad. IME, a smart-charger will not perform miracles. What it can do is: -Recharge the battery more effectively than other chargers, so you get more cranking amps back. More amps = more power after all with all other things equal. -Preserve a battery with the charger left relatively unattended. This is the big reason for why smart-chargers took off over the older chargers. Prevention is better than cure after all. Can they desulphate a battery? Yes, but they have their limits; they can't revive a battery due to neglect. Once the battery has been sulphated for a while it will turn into a rock hard substance. At that point the battery is on a one-way trip to the bin. Even my older Halfords pulsing charger/CTEK have failed to: -Revive a 15 year old battery, in an MG Midget I bought stood for years. It would take a voltage, but it couldn't hold it and the cranking amps? No chance. -5 year old battery in my W124 ; I tried the RECOND function on my CTEK and the normal mode with the temperature compensation activated. It did put power back into the battery, but the newer smaller battery I threw in walked all over it. -Mondeo Battery in the old man's 2.5T; Same as the Merc battery. It did take more cranking amps than the Halfords one with the CTEK, albeit it was way short. -Mate's battery; He had an Optimate on that. I put it onto my tester. Despite coming fresh off the Optmate it registered 130CCA on the tester; way short of the stated 360CCA the battery should be. That battery probably would still start my Citroen 2CV and possibly even an older Mini I reckon. The solution? Either keep buying batteries or maintain them (i.e charge them with a smart-charger) when they should be charged . Voltage doesn't tell you if the battery is any good. The cranking amps do as well. After all: Power = Voltage x Current  . The reason batteries can seem to be fine after charging is down to: -The CCA being large on the battery to cover a variety of conditions; batteries have a less effective CCA as things get colder, and better when they are warmer, to a point. -The car may not need all of the CCA to spin over effectively ; This is why many cars come with larger batteries to account for a variety of conditions. Some CTEKs have a supply mode, like the MXS-10 and MXS-5.0, which will make it act as a dumb charger; it will just "supply" out a pre-set voltage. I've used this mode on a number of occasions for testing relays, radios. This is an alternative method. I didn't realise this. I bought mine for it being a smart-charger and it having the supply mode which doubles up as a 'tender' for when coding cars and doing things like B6 Passat rear pad changes with VCDS. |
