I've always tried to keep ICE period in keeping with my cars and I'm happy to have owned the best of Sony, Pioneer, Nakamichi etc. I spent a lot of time getting the correct Becker for one of my old Mercs, and while on a different Merc parts mission was when I first laid eyes on a Clarion G80? seperates system.
So what epic retro sounds do we have here on the forum? Extra internet points available if anyone can remind me of an offshoot brand of (pretty sure it was) Pioneer. I had a 90's Toyota Surf years ago with a 2 stack of DIN sized head units for tape and CD. Cant for the life of me remember what they where called.

Not period correct, but not current in my car. Kenwood headunit and 3+1 MD changer That is a cool setup. MD is a nice touch. Reminds me of the double setup you could get in the Sapphire Cosworth.

I've got a classic Alpine headunit in my daily, but the rest of the system is modern. You can't beat a digital, programmable crossover Sounds great, i really love it

Pioneer still make good gear, I have a P99RS!!! A little bit retro looking, mad-spec DAC, independent left and right 31 band 1/3 octave EQ and crossovers and time-alignment to run an active three-way system PLUS sub!

I've got an old Sony radio-cassette in the Firenza. I picked Sony because they have a socket for a wired remote control "stalk" that I can put on the steering column. In the HC range, there was no provision for a radio in the dashboard, so it has to go in a pod under the dash, and the presence of everything else means it's right down at the bottom. To alter the volume as you get onto a motorway and suddenly can't hear anything means reaching down further than I was comfortable with, so the remote solves it nicely. I know a lot of modern stuff has remotes, but they tend to be wireless, and I find it nice to have it fixed in place, so I know where it is. Each year on the car boot sales, if I see a Sony with the remote socket for a quid or two, I'll buy it for spares.

Ironically, a mounted remote is coming back in to fashion for modern cars, as changing the head unit becomes expensive/impossible due to integration of other controls (ac etc)

I've got this continental unit in my W140. Every modern feature you want in a period correct look.

I have this in at the moment (I don't have a photo of the speakers, but they're an old set of Kenwoods at the rear and some Vibe 4'' speakers at the front).
However, I have the DCR-1000R CD and DCH-470 CD changer to be fitted soon.

Wow, Denon!! I had no idea they did car stuff. Found a Technics head unit on ebay a couple of years back and that was a first for me.

Never seen a Technics, but Denon was quite a force for a while in car audio. Anyone remember the DCA800? Six channel amp, legendary! Denon also made head units for Rockford Fosgate iirc...

Despite having a billion nice head units and changers and amps, I have an old Sony in the green thing and a nice Alpine in the Monza but I haven't driven any of my cars or listened to the stereos in about 3 years really.
Sent from my life has become this using proboards

I've still got an Alpine 3DE-7887, probably the most unusual head unit I've ever owned. One day I'll use it in another car, just for giggles, the cartridge ejecting caught a few people out.
