As a lot of you are a ware grumpynorthener is currently working on my 1967 Corsair so I'm looking ahead to the time when I'm ready to start using it.
The car is already down on the log book as a Vehicle Of Historic Importance thank you previous owner Barry Jones but it has been on SORN since
I had the car in 2016 and not having been through Mot since 29 April 2010.
My questions are to those who have been through the procedure before me is due to the log book status and that it has not had an Mot since 2010 do I have to have the car Moted after I take it off SORN for it to qualify for Mot Exemption or can I do the removal of the SORN and the Mot Exemption all at the same time online using the DVLA website?
I know I can sort out the SORN on the DVLA website but not the Mot Exemption part.
All opinions, views & experiences appreciated.
Pete

There's a form to download, V 112 If I remember. It's a declaration of Mot exemption. For my '67 SIMCA coupe which was last on the road in 1977, once I'd insured it, I filled in the V112 and took it along to the post Office along with the V5 (that needed updating as 'Historic Vehicle' came in since it was last on the road). Everything went through OK and 3 weeks later an updated V5 came through from DVLA.

scmick thank you for the info as said previously my Corsair is already on the log book as "Historic Vehicle" so do I need the V112, I have heard of 3 others just doing the Mot Exemption part online and no new V5 sent out all altered "electronically" but is that right?

My brother Kev's MATRA-SIMCA Bagheera (the orange one on our stand at the NEC) returned to the road recently. He did it via the Post Office because we'd found them so efficient re. my coupe. I've not tried doing the V112 bit electronically.

scmick Could you please tell me what V5 says when they returned it?
Historic vehicle? Does it also say mot exempt vehicle?
I did my amazon at post office and woman said she couldn't do anything with the form but assured me it was taxed and mot exempt.
When you check online I'm sure it says not mot'ed and lower down says this vehicle may not require mot.
A bit confusing!

If it were mine I would MOT it anyway, always better to have another set of eyes look at the car and check for brake balance etc, a lot of insurers have some wording in the small print like "it needs to be check by a competent person yearly"

Getting free road tax is a nice saving on a classic but not paying what is a small amount of money for a MOT is false economy. Having a second pair of eyes checking things on a ramp you may have missed yourself when the car is on axle stands is worth the cost alone. Looking at your own car from underneath on a ramp and taking photos is a bonus .

v8brick The new V5C for both my '67 1200S Coupe and my '77 SIMCA 1100 both have 'Historic Vehicle' as the new taxation class but I can find no reference to Mot exemption. Having initially submitted a V112 form for each of those cars when last due for 'taxing', I'd expect the reminder when it's due again to refer to the MoT exemption.

It being a Historic Vehicle on the V5 means it can tax exempt. However, to qualify for the MOT exemption you'll need a separate form, a V112. Me? I'd MOT it personally, but that's down to the individual .

When I did our Minor after approx 15 years off the road (it was though registered as a historic vehicle) all I had to do was insure it and go on line to tax it during the process I had to tick a box confirming it was MOT exempt, on line status now shows taxed and no MOT data.
Not MOT'ing it as the very first drive for a rebuilt car is a very useful facility to enable a basic shake down and in my case legally moving from the front to the back of the house (all of 50M) on a public road.

The car was bought from an MOT tester and I went all over it on the ramp. It's had new front calipers etc and is rock solid underneath.
I exempted it as NOS water pump was leaking on seal's.
Didn't want to drive with that leaking while waiting for new one! I just wanted it legal for similar situation that Kevin's has.
When I swap car's about in drive and street they are all insured taxed and tested.
