Hi RR. I was in England over the last week and my super Chevy S-10 was left parked up in Germany. Got back to it on Friday, it turned over slowly then fired up. Made the mistake of parking and then the battery was dead! Decided today I needed to take it for a charge so drove across the city to my mates house. The weather was terrible but I just enjoyed being out in the thing. After a brew at my mates I thought "Sod it lets keep going!" So drove over to Classic Remise in Düsseldorf to see what's new. Spent half an hour looking at nice cars then jumped back in mine and headed home. Got close to home and took another detour to Motor world in Cologne and checked out more cars! Then took the longer way through the city and got home. The weather was not the best. I spent the time either in traffic or on the motorway so hardly the Stelvio. But you know what? It couldn't have been better! My advice to any one is when you next get a few hours get out in the car and go for a drive to nowhere! Here are two photos! One of a sheddy S-10 and one of something cool!

I regularly found my GSXR wouldn't turn left out of work if the weather was nice ...

Managed to do 34,500 miles in 13 months when I had a VX220 (Opel Speedster for you Euro guys) just by taking the long way home.
Sometimes I didn't take the long way, I just drove past and kept on driving!

What an inspiring post, and replies.
I am on the road 5 days a week, my life is made up of traffic, point A to B to C and back to A mostly.
However, over weekends I sometimes do the detour home or even randomly driving.
It is a great thing, and I for one don’t do it enough.
PS. Love yourtruck ✅

With just about 2 miles to work as the crow flies, there is probably a dozen routes i can take, and usually mix it up. For early shift i usually need to use the 7 minute route in the morning, and home is about 15 minutes going the long way but only urban dual carriageway.
Getting to maw n paws i rarely use the most direct route which is always snarled up, even on a Sunday! All the very best, Geoff.

Depends which car I'm driving. If I'm in my modern, straight home. If I'm in the MX5, country lanes all the way!

Often take the long way, and not just in my car. I cycle to work, and it's about half a mile from home, but I've got a nice five mile route that I take most mornings just to sort of blow the cobwebs away!

Yes it’s a good thing to do. I do it a lot, especially on one of my many motorcycles. Whatever you do, don’t tell David Attenborough though, or that little Swedish kid, Greta.

Yeap! I walk to work (6 minutes) but whenever I end up with a car at the office it turns right for the 35 mile alternative Cheers Matt

I used to drive down to portsmouth in my MGF to watch the boats come and go at 3am when I got off shift. That's about an extra 80 miles onto the trip home xD.
These days the long way is motorway driving so I don't bother going that way and just go down the country roads which, whilst shorter is much more rewarding. I find when the weather is better, I drive slower and take it in.
I quite like driving through whitchurch every now and then because there's an american car specialist there with LOADS of trucks and cobra replicas there which are always an interesting look.

Not on the way home, but I guy I worked with in the early 80’s was sat on his Dads lawn at home one Sunday lunchtime, bored. He got in his, at the time properly knackered P6 Rover & went for a drive. He lived in Mansfield, drove down to Newquay, went in a club he knew, had half a lime & lemon & drove back. (About 600 miles round trip) Got back about 5am ish. We used to start work at 6am, so he had about an hours kip in the car then clocked on. He’d do similar things every now & then

He stopped for a small refreshment around halfway down at a wee pub (This was quite a few years ago)
Anyway, he got, shall we say "embroiled" with the landlady and spent quite a few days there. When he finally decided it was time to go he went back to his bike, only to find an empty space! I think he stayed for another couple of days then got the bus home.

Wow you must live well north if it’s ‘down’ to Edinburgh I'm over 2hrs North of Edinburgh. It's rubbish for retro cars, everything is at the end of the country.

All the time, bud! Doesn't even really matter what car I'm driving, I just love the simple act of driving. I found a route to my work that largely lets me stay off the highways and is relatively pleasant to drive. Takes longer than the direct route but I don't have to deal with so much traffic and the route is pretty nice. Very often I'll expand my route a bit just to get a few more minutes of driving in. I just love it when you've found a nice flow, accelerating, braking and steering the car as if it's just one movement, no sharp jerks or anything. Just a smooth glide over the roads. Hi RR. I was in England over the last week and my super Chevy S-10 was left parked up in Germany. Got back to it on Friday, it turned over slowly then fired up. I've been to Remise a few times and it's always worth a visit, but I haven't been to Motorworld.

We often do road trips across Europe and I rarely take the most direct route .
I look at point a and b on the map and places roughly in the directions that are interesting to visit
This year we are off to Austria in the summer and will be going via Munich for a beer or two
