For sale is our trusty old Range Rover workhorse. Details as below:
Range Rover P38 4.6 HSE Automatic with Tow Bar
1996 'N' Registration
Oxford Blue with Grey Leather
197k Miles
MOT until January 2020
My cousin and I purchased this old girl a few weeks back. He was getting his garden completely re-done, so needed to move all the old curse word and rubble and my parents have just cleared out their shed, so needed that taking to the tip. Also, had to do a few trips to pick up a couple of sets of alloys as well as an exhaust system for a 5 Series.
Not had a P38 for several years, so we just got this. Something rather cool and brutish about these old girls.
Let's begin by confirming that this is not a garage queen - it is an old work horse that does what these were designed to do. It tows with ease, carries huge loads and cruises at 70+ mph with no problems.
Mechanically sound, starts first time. The 4.6 litre V8 sounds epic when it starts up, and has a nice V8 woofle when moving along. No overheating, even yesterday whilst sitting in M3 traffic and the outside temperature was over 25 degrees. Has a slight weep of oil from the rocker gaskets, common on these. But it's not flowing out, and leaves a couple of drops on the drive. What old, high mileage P38 doesn't?! Also has a slight ticking / tapping noise, which appears to be coming from one of the exhaust manifolds leaking (my old 4.6 did this as well).
Air suspension works a treat. Raises up and down and it should. Even goes to the lowest setting to get in and out of the car.
The gearbox is good and gear changes are as they should be. Currently this is 2WD only, as the centre prop has been disconnected (included and in the boot). This is how I purchased it and it drives fine. Tyre tread is ok, but bear in mind they are quite old and getting perished (new wheels and tyres on eBay for less than £100).
Externally, she is pretty battered and bruised. Marks, blemishes and scratches to be expected. OSR light has a crack and is taped up and there is a dent just above that. Lacquer has peeled in places. Plastic areas have faded. Still looks ok and has the menacing Range Rover presence.
Leather is very worn. All door cards are loose, the driver's one has fallen off (needs attaching back on with new clips). Due to this, the driver's door can only be opened from the outside. All seats adjust fine. Everything appears to work as it should.
Has the usual array of P38 warning sounds, mainly for the windows and sunroof 'Not Set'. But they all operate as they should, so these can be ignored. Let's be honest - it wouldn't be a P38 without these foibles!
Actually a really nice old bus to waft in, wallowy and boat-like, but quite soothing to drive in a weird way. And those seats are so damn comfortable, no back ache or discomfort at the end of the journey. They support you much better than how they look like they would.
Averaged 19.3 MPG on a fast run back from Bournemouth to Berkshire. According to the fuel gauge, it drank a third of a tank to do around 90 miles. So it would probably do around 250 miles on a full tank.
Comes with: One Remote Key, Land Rover Leather Folder, User Manuals, A Few Bills and MOT Certificates. One bill for £650 in 2016, for two new suspension air bags and a major service. Even comes with a quarter tan of fuel, but this will (quickly) disappear if its used over the net few days!
We have had our use out of it, now time to move it on. Ideal tow car, work horse, farm vehicle, etc.
Sold as seen, all inspections are welcome. No warranty given or implied.
Located in Shinfield, Berkshire, RG2 post code.
