Make sure your side of the story is cohesive and consistent. Pictures are always good to have and make sure all the facts add up.
I was involved in an accident a while back (5 or 6 years ago) and it was not my fault. The other driver admitted fault (3 lanes were going into 2 lanes and his lane was ending). His insurer was trying to put 50% the blame on me and my insurance tried very hard to make me accept it. I did not budge. In the end the accident was settled as 100% 3rd party fault and I was given over £250 in compensation on top of the payout from my insurer for trying to make me admit 50% fault when there was none.
If you are sure it was not your fault. Stick with it, just make sure you have all the facts!
Good luck!

My Mrs had an accident 5yrs ago that was 100% not her fault (She was stationary in the correct lane of a massive roundabout in Guildford, when a scaffold lorry realised he was in the wrong lane and cut across her front damaging the door, wing and bonnet) He got out, said sorry, admitted blame and details were exchanged. Later that day, she reported incident to here insurer who took down all the details. 2 day later, they told her that the owner of the scaffold company has now said it was 50/50 and they advised my wife to accept this to speed up the claim. I told her to do no such thing and it dragged on and on for months until finally, we got a court date. We both took a days holiday and turned up at the court at the time we were told to and found out that earlier that morning, the scaffold company owner changed his plea and accepted 100% liability. We then sent a bill to his insurer for 2 taxi rides, 2 days wasted holiday & a slap up lunch - they paid without quibble. However.... for the last 5 years, she has has increased premiums when insuring her car bacuse they always ask "Have you had any accidents in the last 5 years, whether it was your fault or not" and she has to say, yes, but it wasn't my fault. To the insurer, that is irrellavant - she claimed ££££ and therefore is a greater risk. TOTALLY UNFAIR!

Unfortunately insurance companies can be as dodgy as anyone and so can solicitors, so write down everything. Every phone call, letter, EVERYTHING.
When i was young and a new driver, someone ran into me on a roundabout. He was in the wrong lane. As luck would have it, it turned out we both had the same insurance company. It almost automatically went to 50/50. The solicitor who represented me pretty much acted like he couldn't really be bothered pushing this for any more. He convinced me it wouldn't be worth fighting. I was naive and young and was totally in the hands of this solicitor and really didn't know or understand the processes.
In hindsight i got well and truly diddled and that is from companies you pay a lot of money to and should be able to trust. Had dash cams been invented back then things would of been different.
Also, when my mrs had someone hit her a few years ago, again there were that many people involved, nobody was explaining the process or who was who. Several times we had people call telling us they were representing her insurance company and asking for details, and in actual fact they were from the other party!!! The whole industry stinks and you can't trust anyone.
Keep to your story, keep to the facts, be careful what you say and record everything. Even record phone calls if you can. Good luck!

Just wanted to add another tale of honesty.
I had my mirror broken a couple of months back and he left a note on my windscreen. Heated electric mirrors so £140 in bits to fix. He was absolutely spot on, i fixed it, he paid without any quibble. I was so impressed i just put black mirror caps on to avoid him the cost of painting them, its only my work van.
There really are some honest people out there still, how many times to people leave a note for a broken mirror!

My mrs was telling me just today she observed a cretin cave in someone's door pulling into a parking space, get out, have a look and then left, no note or anything, the wife jotted down the car and reg, and left a note on the damaged car.

This happened to my Mam's Micra a couple of months ago. Not much damage (bumper pushed in, and paint cracked). The owner seemed to think it was okay as both cars are 'old' but she put her hands up and she admitted it was her fault, but after talking to her partner, they disagreed with the damage and said it had always been there. So basically, never trust anybody when it comes to insurance claims.

This happened to my daughter, when we pursued the claim we were told that no action could be taken because of lack of evidence, and the police couldn’t be bothered to trace the reg!

The Police must pursue it sometimes though as I have dealt with court cases on a professional basis where people have been successfully prosecuted for leaving the scene of an accident and failing to provide details. The last one I saw had CCTV evidence from a station car park as well as signed witness statements from bystanders at the time given to the Police. The bloke got a fine and associated court costs, plus penalty points on his licence. However unfortunately I think a high percentage of the general public wouldn't be comfortable to go that far to help.

The insurance company will usually trace the owner through the DVLA.

^^^^They probably would have done, but as noted earlier we were trying to keep it out of the hands of her insurers, once they know, your policy usually increases under the ‘ it’s no claim, not no blame’ excuse. In the end it was a few breakers yard parts and ignore the panel damage, not a very satisfactory outcome, but cheaper than making a claim. Car has been scrapped now anyway, but that’s another story
