Looking at a potential retro motor tomorrow, the only issue I can foresee is that the subframe mounting points at the back have been an advisory for a couple of years...
It's relatively cheap, but then it's not particularly rare...and I can't weld so I'd be paying someone to do it.
Is it going to cost me a fortune to fix and should I just walk? Or use it as a haggling point?

you really need to look at with someone that will repair it
it could be little more than surface rust that would clean up and last years longer with a smear of grease /wax over it ....OR it could be on its last legs and need hundreds spending...also once a car needs welding theres a good chance thats not the only area thats ropey
quality welding isnt cheap..my mate has an 04 and thats pretty scruffy underneath , if he hadnt cleaned it up /treated id imagine it would be failing mot's soon

You probably find it will be cheap enough to bodge but an absolute fortune to fix. Not that i have any experience with ford rangers thats just how rust tends to be!

Could be anything between chassis rot or a hole in the bed floor, possibly cab mount rot? It Smacks of a tester who’s never seen a separate chassis vehicle before, doesn’t really understand what he’s looking at, and has picked the wrong advisory from the list. If he’s only ever seen monocoques before, id guess he’s incorrectly assumed the body as being the major structure and not the chassis, and is referring to the actual chassis as a subframe, which means it’s probably a bed floor mount he’s talking about. If it is a bed floor mount it’s entirely ignorable, the bed would have to be literally falling off to even get a mention in a test, as he should be inspecting the load-bearing chassis and not the untestable bodywork.

Take the welder man with you and let them decide, all too often a simple patch turns in to a massive job. Why a Ranger? Mazda Bongo 2.5 Engine, basic bomb proof but not the best on fuel, in a Biongo they do 22MPG around town 30 on a run. All depends on what you want it for and budget,

All depends on what you want it for and budget, I've a hankering for a pickup, this turned up and looked reasonably clean...

I quite like them the Bongo engine is very nippy too, it has cooling issues in the bongo but is fine in the Ranger, all due to position etc. Cheap pick ups are difficult to find good luck

Rangers are proably the best option in the vfm/reliability/customisabilty triangle. I’m framing this in the context of 2wd single or extend cab ‘minitrucks’ Rather than the 4wd off-road versions.
Hilux/lowlux are comparatively mega moneys and hard to find good ones of. The do go on forever though. . Mitsubishi’s are unreliable engine wise and rust even worse than rangers. Nissans are uncommon in non-crewcab 4x4 variants. Isuzu’s probably come in second to rangers as being good trucks, but are less common.
Rangers/b2500s are available, cheap, easy to get parts for and easy to lower and fit cool wheels to.
If you want one with a decent engine, better fuel economy and better performance, get a 2007-up common rail version. They’re a revelation compared to the earlier ones. They also have a lsd and taller gears for motorway cruising as well as all mod cons inside, even though the rest of the underpinnings are essentially the same.
