Has anyone done this on here. There are two bolts, they are both awkward to get to and by some miracle I’ve managed to get one out. The one on the other hand is a pig to get to. I believe the timing belt/water pump bracket is in the way. As tempted as I am to dismantle it I could be kicking a hornets nest.
Short of hammering spanner’s to fit the angle or finding a flexi socket set, what are my options?

Ordered two new tools today then had to cancel both because I managed to undo the bolt. I used a 10mm spanner and turn the bolt a bit, flipped the spanner, turned it a bit more then repeated this what felt like 1000 times. It’s a good job I’m stubborn!
New stat in, fill with fresh coolant, job done, temperature is looking great now.

I was going to suggest a UJ and a ratchet set in an instance like that.

It was a nightmare. I've been putting it off for ages and just got on with it. The next job is the tappet that needs sorting. But I'm trying to figure out what other jobs I can do at the same time. I know a cambelt change could be done.
Would changing the camshaft be viable and could the change produce anymore power?

Bloody VAG. They know thermostats don't last the life of the engine and they persist in putting them in the most inaccessible places. That's an easy one - you don't need to take the timing belt off to get at it!
