I've been offered a little used 2 poster lift for free, however its 3 phase which I don't have in my garage and cant afford to have 3 phase fitted either. Has anyone got a 3 phase lift/ramp that is used with a single phase converter to 3 phase and does it work ok with no issues please. I don't know the make of it, I cant remember, its been a while since I saw it.
TIA

A friend of mine had the 3 phase motor on his lift converted to single phase with a capacitor by a motor specialist. It took them a while as apparently its a vit of trial and error to find the right value capacitor, and i know no more than that about how it works. Pretty sure it needs proper knowledge to achieve, not just chuck a cap on it somewhere, but worth looking into. Motor looses a little power but the lift still copes with his van on it.

It will work with the relevant VFD
If it's a screw type lift it may be possible to change the motor insted.

I bought some parts off a bloke with a three phase lift,
He bought the part to convert single into three, he said its cost about £600 at the time for the part. But said it worked fine.

You'd buy a vfd off Aliexpress or similar to run the lift fairly cheap. I'm using one to run a 3 phase compressor

VFD = Variable Frequency Drive BTW

My son has a VFD on his planer(2 of them) and Band saw, they take a bit of fiddling to set up as the instructions seem to be in Chinglish but work a treat once done , He's 17 and worked it out OK, high voltage is not much more complicated than A 3 pin plug it's all the of low voltage control functions on them which can take a bit of fiddling (remote start, emergency stop, variable speed etc). For things like machine tools they are great because they also offer variable speed control.
Buy one rated quite a bit higher than your motor we've found the inrush current can cause them to trip out otherwise.
If you have a 415 V 3 phase motor it will need to be re-wired from star to Delta as the VFD's only output 240V, you will though lose some torque.

Using a VFD/inverter will work, but as others have said basically reduces the output of the motor. So if you’re working close to the limits for the lift, it may not be able to lift what you need anymore as you’ve basically downgraded it.
You should be able to do a like for like motor swap and get a transformer to run the controls for about £200. Yeah it’s probably a bit more expensive, but it’ll work better. Most of the controls of lifts seem to be 24v so an easy voltage to get a transformer for.

If its a hydraulic lift its just as easy to change the powerpac to single phase , screw lift change the motor but you may need to change pulley to alter gearing to get the lift to start when it has the load already on it .

I converted mine, just need to buy a single phase motor off eBay with right size shaft etc, then bigger contractors as the 3 phase ones carry less amps and your away cost me about £350
