So I’ve been looking at cheap retro stuff to buy in the new year, needs to be usable for commuting A few days a week But needs a certain amount of comfort and “I haven’t seen a nice one of them for a while”factor So say I give you a thousand pounds Then two thousand pounds Then three thousand what would you buy? The original ' But needs a certain amount of comfort' element seems to have passed a lot of contributors by!

1. Audi A3 with the 3.2 and quattro, amazing value though are probably riddled with issues xD 2. Skoda Fun pickup 3. Focus ST3 though finding a non-chavved, non lairy coloured one isn't too easy and realistically, I'd like my next 3k'er to be a suzuki samurai with all the kit.

I've had someone tempt me with an ST3 that's not molested and low mileage. At £5k, you can argue it's not a stupid price either, if you can say that about a 14 year old hot hatch. Buth -Mondeo of mine uses the same engine, so would I really get as big a benefit for £4k more than that? -My annual mileage of 20k will destroy the value of any low mileage car these days. 15k of those are pure work miles now.

For a grand, Saab 9-3 Turbo convertibles are cheap as chips at the moment, I sold a 205 horse Vector Aero auto not long ago for £800 Lot of power for the money, get a pre 2001 model the tax is half the price of identical later cars.
For £2k there's a 62 Buick Special on ebay at the moment, complete with big block V8 a bit rough round the edges and a 4 door to boot, but what a lot of lovely 60s Americana, standing at £1500 about an hour ago!
£3k is the hardest one for me, it's not enough to buy something i'd love rather than like or admire, but like others here, it's more than i'd usually spend. Off the top of my head the only car i've EVER paid that much for was SWMBOs current Picasso Auto (that was 8 years ago and only 6 years and 50k miles old at the time) I like the Cavalier GSi (or anything with a Redtop in it) i'm also rather taken, having driven a couple, with the 2.7 V6 RWD Diesel Jag. I know it's sacrilege, but you just drift along on an endless wave of torque and it's total luxury inside and good on fuel too.

The problem with cars at £1k is that anything can write them off. Take a pre-2001 Saab. Sure, they are cheap. Cracked bulkhead? As adam73bgt can testify, it's an MOT failure, not to mention affecting the steering anyway, and it can cost quite a bit to rectify correctly and do so that it does not fail again. That and any diagnostic work on them is useless compared to more mainstream cars. I know my car dealer friend avoids them like the plague as no 'normal' diagnostic machine will talk to them, and he seems to have access to many systems. On my sister's '07 example, it had to go to Bagnall Saab for me to reset a service light which I left too late to reset via the normal methods (Snap On Solus, VCDS, another Geidan one refused to acknowledge the car). That's a cost no matter how you look at it unless a mate has the genuine GM TECH2 software at hand. My Mondeo is the very same. I love the car, but I'm aware my old man spent £1.4k on a clutch and DMF. Sounds stupid and that he got ripped off? When I priced the bits up myself, the clutch, DMF and slave cylinder were £700 alone prior to even taking the 'box off the car (£200 for an LUK clutch, another £600 for the DMF, again LUK, and around £90 for the slave cylinder ; a clutch is slightly cheaper to source on my M3!). Ouch! Even a thermostat that will work and last more than a year will be £100+. It's not a diesel before anyone says I'm being ripped off. It's a Volvo 5 pot derivative and it seems that rarity just makes things stupidly priced in most instances or dealer only (no one makes aftermarket exhausts for example bar Scorpian at £1k, for a car I only paid £1k for). Most 90s and 00s cars are in that trap, with 80s stuff generally having the issue of zero parts availability bar the bigger brands who are known for supporting the marques like Mercedes, BMW and in a different way, Mazda with the MX-5. Alfas are the same as most Audis in this range. Jags also fall into this trap around the X300-350 stage. By the time a gearbox service, cam chain kit and water pump are done, before you even consider rust, that cash can get a running (albeit not great) MOT'd example. And this folks is why cheap cars either disappear very quickly by being scrapped due to the hassle of selling them, tor hem being uneconomical to repair. Or they rise up in value as a result of either being broken lots and/or people appreciating them more. Pricier labour rates over the years haven't helped that situation. But I do miss those days of when £1k got a genuinely nice car, not some 'minter' that in reality was a tired and worn out heap of junk.

Bulkhead wasn't toooo bad to repair from memory and I got on fine with the obd2 diagnostics on the earlier cars, also the information display could be "unlocked" with remapping to display various bits of info about the engine, getting hard to find the Aero HOT models now though!
