So I’ve been looking at cheap retro stuff to buy in the new year, needs to be usable for commuting A few days a week But needs a certain amount of comfort and “I haven’t seen a nice one of them for a while”factor So say I give you a thousand pounds Then two thousand pounds Then three thousand what would you buy? My choices so far £1000 W202 Mercedes £2000 Jaguar xj6 £3000 Bmw E38 Your choices within that budget?

1. MINI R53 Cooper S. (I bought an R50 Cooper for £900 for the daily hack, which is great, but a supercharged one would be fun to try...) 2. Citroen C5, or XM (or similar hydropneumatic suspension jobbie). 3. Rover P6 3500 (always wanted to try one).

Hmmm, an interesting thread, and it brings me back to cars I considered at such price points. I'll not lie, but a few things have become apparent. -Bar a handful of cars, which are obvious, I've not actually paid more than £2.5k for a car. £3k is simply a figure I've not spent on a car. -I've done the what can I buy for £1-2k before. It's how I ended up with some different cars, including the Clio 172, when orginally I went looking at an Audi TT -The cars I previously consdired for £1k (70s and 80s cars) are now long gone from that price range for the same condition. But other cars have come in with me thinking, "Hmmm, I fancy some of that. Sure for people who want 'true' retros the game has changed buy as cars get older, and the newer stuff gets cheaper, this price point is always evolving. So, what's my choices? I'll not lie, I've struggled with choosing more than I thought! And well, I like being ambitious and then spending a small fortune on a car. I'll never learn... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-Alfa-Romeo-GTV-Twin-Spark-72k-miles/174050197812?hash=item2886334134:g:eWIAAOSwv8pdk6kOI think the GTV wins it! I think I would struggle to get a nice example, but I'd like to think I could get an OK car for that cash point. Other cars I considered at this price point from memory included: -BMW Z3 2.0 -Rover 800 Series -MG (T) F; That one I am still surprised at. £2k? Other choices? An E38 728i Mazda MX-5 I did see a Z3 2.8i for this money; I was tempted! £3k It had to be the E39 540i for me. I'd love one in a touring but they are a little too strong on the cash front. What else? X300 or X308 XJR Alfa 166 - I found a V6 @ £3.4k which would have been my choice over the BMW, but I couldn't find another one for £3k at this time.

Weirdly, I’ve done this and bought cars at all of those price points. £1000 Mini Cooper S(this one was owned by me, not a library pic) £2000 (and with a big chunk of change) Jaguar XJ8 – my current ride and loved more than cars I’ve owned which cost many times more. £3000 Porsche Boxster – this one was owned by me recently. Proper sports car performance and handling for ludicrously low money

Currently driving a 1972 BMW 1602 as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

Interesting thread.
A nice variation on previous discussions
I cannot play. As my taste and needs are so weird.
But have to say, with some searching and some luck added to an open mind, there are some great options out there.
Under £1k Sharan Carat V6
Under £2k decent Japanese people carrier
£3k got me Blazer but not sure where there, possibly V6 Mustang, American “modern” truck.

Jaguar seems to be quite popular Still available at pocket money prices.... I think it's because they're so plentiful and cheap to buy, LS400's were the same but prices seem to be firming up on the good ones as they've got that rep for solidity and they get a bit of the "JDM" attraction. The Jag's (to me at least) appear a bit simpler than other cheap luxobarges, seems to be less to go wrong, no air suspension, the straight 6 engines are pretty solid, my XJ40 was largely fine aside from its thirst and rust. I had an E38 750i which I only bought because it was stupidly cheaply priced, it was a better overall car than the Jag, was better on fuel but changing one of the electronically controlled dampers along with other MOT work ended up costing more than I bought the car for The Jag had a different feel about it though, seemed to get more reaction (even if an attendant at a petrol station asked me if it was a Rover ) Typically after I posted my choices, I got thinking about other alternatives, Saab 9000's, Volvo 740's and the occasional Alfa Romeo 164 pop into budget as well...

I recently saw a similar age (W-reg) silver S-class in Torquay, where almost every panel was showing signs of heavy corrosion.

I was sure I'd know what I'd look for at these prices and it's really difficult!
£1,000 Celica or TT.
£2,000 a wafty V70.
£3,000 a 2CV to work on and fix up with the kids.
