Should circumstance ever leave me single, free of responsibility and still in good health, then I will live in a caravan parked in the corner of a unit. Even if it means maintaining a studio flat as an official residence to keep things legal. Snap! 😂😬 Do we have some sort of psychic connection? This is a regularly reoccurring thought of mine, even down to the caravan, Ttfn Glenn

Having looked through this thread several times over the last few months, I think the only way to make this work financially is to buy a large unit with the potential to sub-divide to rent out and lower your out-goings.
For those that have bought, did you get some sort of mortgage/loan to enable you to buy?
I have seen some lovely units, but they're all 6 figures and needing a loan for me to be able to buy.
I feel the best option is a small-holding/equestrian set-up with some good security as my main problem with any type of property I don't live on is unwanted visitors breaking in to see what's worth nicking.

I feel the best option is a small-holding/equestrian set-up with some good security as my main problem with any type of property I don't live on is unwanted visitors breaking in to see what's worth nicking. That's basically my plan, with the garage I bought in Wales. Half of it will be for me, the other half rented out. It's got B2 planning permission so it would suit someone with a small (but not too noisy) business. I have no idea how much rent I could charge. I'll probably get a professional opinion when it's ready to let, and that won't be for a long time yet because there's so much work to do on the building. So whether or not my brilliant plan works out financially is a bit uncertain at the moment. But even if it all goes horribly wrong at least I own the whole freehold, so at a pinch I could sell up at (hopefully) more money than I paid to buy the place. I'll do my best not to let that happen, though! I never mention the price I paid for the place (even though some of the locals have been fishing....) but it was a fairly modest five figure sum. More than a Ford Fiesta, but less than a Jaguar F-Pace. The reason it was cheap was partly because of its location (out in the wilds), partly because of its condition (mostly derelict) and partly because planning permission for residential conversion had been turned down, making the place effectively worthless from a property developer point of view. A perfect storm, as far as I was concerned!

I have gone down the small holding route also. It’s not to big, 2.25 acres (2 acre field and 0.25 acre garden/yard). There was a garage on site when I moved in which is 12m x 6.5m that needed re-roofing, a static caravan which was good for storing house stuff and a cottage that had had been bungalow gobbled in the 90’s. We bought it in 2007 just before the market crashed for the same price as a nice detached house in the same sort of area. Granted the cottage is smaller, but it was the space we were after. A house can always be made bigger. Again it’s in West Wales but I’m from here so no big change of scenery. Photos please!!!! Hannah's brother wants to move to wales one day- the mortgage he has to pay in Oxford for a pretty curse word small house is absurd and its screwing them over.

Good looking plot ^^^ We did something similar but opted for Lincolnshire, pretty tidy 3 bed house, 2 BIG pretty water tight barns, stable block, other buildings,10 acres of good quality land all for less than a 3/4 bed house back in Bedfordshire

You certainly get a lot more for your money in the sticks. And less neighbours to annoy also.

Yeah that's perfect. I wish my brother would do the move to the country. He lives in Abergavenny (because he likes twee cafes etc more English there then Welsh I always tell him) but he has two dogs, likes cycling and wants/needs a bigger shed. I love living in the countryside and having room to move. For those considering a move be aware that if you have the engineering skills and set up in the right place there is no end of work available fixing all the many things that break around the valley! It's a great lifestyle
