Hi gang, I believe my VW Passat has recently become tax exempt and would like to do this. Date of first registration was October 1979. However the DVLA website continues to say vehicles must be registered before the 1st January 1979. As I recall it's a 40 year rolling exemption (along with MOT) so shouldn't this be vehicles registered before 1st Jan 1980? www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles/vehicles-exempt-from-vehicle-taxIf the above is correct and the website just needs updating, what appropriate steps do I need to take to process this, or is it unlikely to happen at the moment given the virus situation? Car currently has an MOT until 26th April (but assume 26th Oct now with govt. extension) and was taxed, however I SORNd it on 31st March this year (as getting little use given current restrictions). Any thoughts or tips appreciated! Ta

I went to the Post Office with mine and they did it all in a single job - converted to historic, sent the V5 off and gave me 12 months free VED, but that was a couple of years ago. Not sure if you have a post office open near you that could do it.
I suspect the DVLA web site is just lagging behind a bit. As far as I'm aware the jumping-forward aspect of it is now in law, it doesn't need to be announced in the budget any more, so it will have happened.

The DVLA are still working, but Covid-19 has slowed them down inevitably. People are either self-isolating and there has been a surge in issuing info for commercial vehicles more than ever. I'm not just talking about new registrations but things like O-Licences, OCR reports, all of that kind of stuff. It took them 4 weeks to process my registration for the Velosolex. So bear with them . Call them if you want to progress it .

I was wondering about this as My Capri is a 1979 and my folks Spitfire is a 79. Seen as its Sorn and we cant do much i havent gone rushing down the post office but i guess like is said above, the website must be lagging behind.

It’s been two days - I suspect DVLA have bigger issues right now!
The INF34/website isn’t a legal document - the law decides if your car is historic class and you can still drive it while the change in class is being carried out.
So if you take your V5 to the Post Office (there is no online option for initial class change) when you want to drive your car again, they’ll change the VED class online and send the V5C away.

The minivan I posted about in ‘a small win’ has had its mot status changed to green and ‘no details held’ but tax is still red & untaxed That’s despite being off the road since about 1996

SORN started in 98 so it’ll be fine. Tax won’t change until VED class is changed to historic on the V5C.

I'm wondering if something has gone on with my V5 as I posted it at the Post Office about 3 weeks back if not longer and it still hasnt come back. Obviously its Covid times but, the PO clerk wrote Historic in the relevant V5 box and then told me to write the DVLA address on the front. The Car is Sorn and I havent received the V5 back and the Car still comes up as Sorn on the website. Anyone else had this problem during this time? I havent contacted them as its not a pressing issue for me at the moment but, the car is close to completion now.

DVLA site does say they aren't processing post applications unless key worker etc. This might be why I havent had anything back but, how do they know if I am a key worker i wonder? Its been about 5-6 weeks now... loosing track a bit. Do you just get automatic historic tax even if the Car is Sorn? mine is Sorn so I don't know if i need to tax its first ? I havent done anything as the V5 still isnt back.

Anywhere else and I’d say you’ll get away with it, but being in London you’re highly likely to get an automated fine through the post and have to fight it 😒

I went to the post office with the V5 for my 1979 bike last week, they taxed it for free and sent off the V5 for me. The lady said it would take about 6 weeks to get the document back. No forms to fill in and taxed for free immediately. Its the first vehicle where I've changed the class and put it on the road and it was easy.
