I read on the internet (which is always true) that you can put a VTEC B-series head onto a Honda B20 engine to create a "frankenstein" hot B20 VTEC engine. Has anyone tried it? Or know what's involved? Opinions on the internet range from just slapping a B18 head on and calling it done, to needing a bottom end rebuild with tougher internals before even thinking about a VTEC head.
I'm just indulging in a bit of a lockdown flight of fantasy... I've got too many projects to do and ripping apart my daily driver would be a bad idea, but just theoretically... how far do you have to go with this conversion to get a useable engine? Can you keep the B20 ECU? B20 ancillaries? Will the B20 bottom end explode?

What is the daily by the way? The other person to speak to is Bob's partner Rachel - she is most knowledgeable about all things Honda. Rysz. EDIT - Looking at this, I am assuming a CRV if it's the 2.0L? There is a recipie for a hot 2L, let me see if I can find it - it's always been relevant to my interests... The 2.0 is built the way it is for the extra torque though for the weight of the vehicle and 4WD losses.

I did B16 head onto B20 bottom end for a guy, just used the B20 head gasket. Didn't make much more horsepower than a B16 but a lot more torque and the power was more useable, however the gearing wasn't great as you couldn't rev it high.

Have a look at what the BoostedBoiz are doing on Youtube. www.youtube.com/channel/UC8LsMvKJ-l8a8nASFsuH4WwIf you go back to their earlier stuff they were doing all sorts of mix and match - now it is all high horsepower K series with huge turbos and 700HP+.... Nice flight of fancy. P.

Thanks for the replies and indulging my lockdown engine swap pipe dreaming! I should have mentioned, the B20 in question is in my Mk1 Honda CRV, which I really like as a daily driver but would love to have a bit more poke. My thinking was that a B16 head swap might be easier* and cheaper** than a full engine swap. But if a complete B16 or B18 VTEC would bolt straight in*** then perhaps that would be the better route. All in theory, of course! It's the engine management I'm struggling to find out about. If a B20 with VTEC head can keep the original management, then that would simplify things although I guess some kind of manual VTEC control would be needed as you said rysz. What management did the engine you built run, stealthstylz? I'm quite familiar with swapping BMW and Mercedes stuff about but Honda is a whole new world to me. That Youtube channel is not helping me suppress the urge to take apart my daily, Paul Y! Some good stuff in there. *nothing's ever easy
**think of a number. Multiply it by 2. And again. Once more... there we go.
***they all just bolt straight in, just like the bloke down the pub said it would.

Hondata seems to be the engine management of choice but piggy back chips abound. Just K swap and Turboooooooooo and you are good for 500whp. P.

If you are not subscribed to Richard Holdener then you are missing a real gem. It just so happens that he has just dropped this which might change your mind on the route you take... P.
