A neighbour of mine has lost her Motability Car so is on the lookout for a runabout to get around in the requirements are
£1000 budget 5 door Manual transmission Cheap tax Cheap insurance Cheap to run Reliable
She’s not into cars and has no brand loyalty so any suggestions will be most helpful. It would be easier if she had a particular make and model in mind but she’s open to anything
I’m thinking of a Suzuki Alto About 2005/06 but if anyone has a better alternative I’d like to hear

OK, for the budget she might not get everything she wants, or if she comes close it will mean compromises in terms of capabilities. Every used car is a gamble, £1K is borderline banger territory, I'm assuming she won't be mechanically minded or inclined to scramble about below the car to inspect it so she should try to take someone who has some idea what they're looking for along to view any prospective purchases to lessen the possibility of buying a pup. Daewoo MatizSupermini 796cc 44mpg average Insurance group 5 £165pa tax SPECSREVIEWNotes: Generally favourably reviewed by owners. It hasn't developed a reputation as a problematic car. Not at its best on the motorway.

Had a similer situation with my Aunt afew years ago. A Vauxhall Agila became available locally and she asked me what I thought of it. I couldn't see any reason why not, low mileage ect ect. She loved it and it did everything she needed. When it got tapped in the side it got written off, and she tasked me with finding her another as she couldn't imagine having anything else. Theres afew on ebay under or around the £1k mark.

personally for that sort of money i would get an old shape nissan micra pop the bonnet and check the lower front cross member in front of the radiator if thats not rusty generally the rest will be ok. £1000 will get about the best one out there or lots of change.

Honda Jazz. None of the others even get close. If you were just looking at the quality of the car, absolutely. The brief is to look at a combination of factors including cost to insure and the lowest insurance group for the Jazz is a 12.

Hi Paul, thanks for the offer I have asked her but she’s said no thank you. Thanks everyone for you suggestions I really appreciate the response. My neighbour just messaged me she’s going to see an 55 plate Kia Picanto tomorrow with her daughter, I have offered to tag along and have a look for her but she’s declined ( their going shopping first) She’s going to send me some details of the car so I can at least do an MOT check Thanks all

The Kia must be as good an idea as any of the others here, would probably have been someones suggestion sooner or later. Let us know how she gets on.

Picanto - insurance is up a couple of groups but impressive mpg's should balance that out. There's lots of five-star reviews from owners!

Hyundai Getz? My daughter had one and it was marvellous. Really good on fuel, extremely reliable (original exhaust needed replacement at 110k, original clutch needed changing at 120k). They're actually quite well-built and surprisingly roomy for it's size.

I was in a similar position helping my girlfriend get a cheap car last year, ended up getting her a 1.2 Fiat Grande Punto for about 800 I think. Not the lowest of low in terms of tax but its been a perfectly decent car and you can get them pretty cheap

don't place too much on insurance groups, they don't always translate into premium cost, they use claims history as well, best way is to get a quote.

We brought a little Aygo for my better half as a runaround. I have to say that I’m very impressed with it. It’s free to Tax cheep to insure and just sailed through the MOT. Its also fun to drive, with that 3 cylinder thrumming away. And You can actually work on the car and do your own servicing your self. It is even telling you that you can in the owners manual.

I have a 2007 Ford Fiesta 1.4 petrol, its the bottom of the range so has very little to go wrong and has been a really good car, I would think you would get a nice one for less than £1000.
