The first vehicle to be fitted with a lateral sliding door was a Citroen Tub Built between 1939 - 1941 - less than 1800 of them were built and only a handful survive today - they were replaced by the Citroen H van So what other retros were fitted with sliding doors The Nissan Prairie was unusual in the respect that the rear sliding door also acted has the cars B post when closed And I ran one of these ex Royal Mail for few years So what do you have in the shape of memories / ownership / pics

When I used to order new Bedford CF vans in my first job some were ordered with sliding drivers door, iirc the option was known as delivery spec i.e. you could open the door on busy streets without clouting pedestrians. Always rattled like a barsteward from new!

I had an early Chrysler Voyager with sliding doors, lovely thing, economical, easy to park, tilt out rear windows to flap and amuse the kids in the car behind... It could transport a huge amount of stuff even with 2 out of 3 rows of seats in. Chocolate gearbox unfortunately.

Very fond memories of a '78 hiace van... notably loading a dozen or so kids in the back onto scatter cushions and heading off to our nearest new fangled attraction for my 10th birthday...a chinese resturant!!
Later on it was one of the many different things i learned to drive in...loved the column change.
Pic is of same colour van...less all the rust... but it didnt have the kicking wheels or banging lows!!

I was very recently considering one after having my arm twisted by my mate who has one. Joined a member's club on Facebook and most posts are a horror story about them . "I love it, but....." On topic, we had a Nissan Serena when I was little. I believe LDV made police vans out of them.

I think my old Townace was the only vehicle I’ve actually owned with a sliding door. I did used to drive a Mitsubishi Space Runner as a work vehicle (with blue lights on the roof), which was horrible. Went like a rocket in a straight line and felt like it was seriously considering killing you every time you put it into a corner at anything like a sporting pace.

When I was about 7 my Aunt and Uncle had a VW Bay Window camper affectionately named "Besty". Perfect for taking me, my brother and our 4 cousins out on trips around the Kent Countryside in the late 70s. This isn't Betsy, but a similarly coloured one I found on a Google search.

Also my Dad's Milk Float from the early 80s. I remember helping him on his round. This battered old thing was the slowest thing on the Dairy's fleet - I think its top speed was about 11 mph!

We had a BMC JU van in the family fleet at one stage - although not in police livery And this iconic J type van sees regular use at Goodwood Revival every year In both cases the doors slide internally - to the inside of panels rather than externally

We had an early petrol sliding-door Sherpa as a band van for a while in 1989/90. It wasn’t really big enough for us so we pressed a Honda Acty into service as a second van to carry the PA.....until one night when the engine blew up so we towed it with the Sherpa. Poor roadie had to sit in the Acty and steer it whilst being slowly asphyxiated by worn B-Series oil fumes. 😂
Anyhoo......the sliding doors on the Sherpa were brilliant on a hot day. Better than any aircon!
