Peugeot Expert, 1.9D DW8.
What could make a starter motor which works perfectly fine on a cold engine stick and fail to work after a journey and therefore warm engine?
Last year I stripped it down and found two rusted brushes. I was sick of it struggling to start on winter.
It's hardly moved since October but now gives the symptoms of a dying battery when starting on a warm engine - gets slower then just fails to move and just the solenoid clicks.
Hitting it with a big hammer fixes it.

Failing earth, caused by heat soak?

I would start by checking the obvious i.e. that it retains a good earth (earth strap to engine) and that the terminals to the starter & solenoid are clean & tight

Sounds like the same thing that happened with my micra. It started as an intermittent problem when it was hot, but it would always start when cold, and got me to work and back safetly. Then I found myself making special trips to the garage to get fuel so I wouldnt stop when it was hot because I knew it wouldnt start. Luckily I had a scrapper on the drive, so I did the easy thing first and changed the ignition switch. Didnt work. With the starter motor right up the back of the engine the next thing I did was retighten the terminals. No joy. Then I pincked the starter motor off the scrapper. The one that came off mine was a Valeo unit, the one off the scrapper was a Bosch unit. A fair bit of swearing and working by feel alone (couldnt see naff all once your hand was up there) and we got the starter on. It was the starter at fault, the Bosch one worked perfectly. Aside from not being able to hit it my symptoms were the same as yours, so Id say its the starter.

Oh, it's deffo the starter. Belting it with a hamner to fix it shows that. Today I swapped batteries etc and the only fault is the starter. I'm just curious as to what causes it to fail when hot.
I'll get it out soon for a strip down but predict all will look "ok".

The new battery improved things for a few weeks before it got worse. I never did find out what the problem was with the starter, I just binned the old one when the new (S/H) one solved the problem. Id be interested to know what causes the problem tho.

sticky solenoid , probably got a bit of dust in there that binds up when hot , either strip down and refresh , or fit a new one...

It was the brushes which were well and truly not moving. They've been freed off and new ordered. Works... for now!
