It looks like it's graffiti paint to me.
But as for real harlequins I agree I can't see manufacturers offering the same again as official options.
The ruling for V5 colours then was the chassis colour so it would have been yellow in the above example - if it was a genuine harlequin - as the doors / bonnet / boot / bumpers etc bolt on.
The v5 colour ruling changed early 2000s to be the majority colour of the vehicle rather than chassis.

I seem to recall they were listed as 'multicolour' on the V5s, although I could be wrong.

I had noticed on a previous DVLA database trawl that the Harlequin has an impressively high survival rate, far higher than other contemporary models.

I painted 2 previous cars (badly) in urban Camo 1st ~ 1995, 2nd 2008 on both occasions the colour was changed and listed as "Mulitcolour" as directed by DVLA Krishna coupe by creativeq, on Flickr 1423643542_da50c225de by creativeq, on Flickr 1423644238_db444e89c6 by creativeq, on Flickr 1423644978_7e86d111e6 by creativeq, on Flickr To make Audi coupe fans cry, I asked if anyone knew of a cheap car to take on a euro rally. I was given 3 and ended up giving 2 away. JNP was sold afterwards for ~ £300 which was a good price in 2009.

I'm a former smart car owner - as body panels were interchangeable and could be changed in a few hours and as often as you saw fit - Or by dealerships they were all registered as the chassis colour (black or silver at the time) So if a buyer walked in and wanted the car they already had but in a different colour the dealership could swap panels over and sell it to them without having to change the colour each time.

Ok so I understand that Merc may have set out their stall like that (possibly BMW for the Z1 also?).
But you mentioned the ruling for V5 pre / post 2000 where is that info from ?

Strange that they were available in four combinations They all look equally like half-cocked accident damage repairs. I never really got the appeal at the time and still don't now. I suppose it was different at the time and still manages to look better than 95% of modern offerings. It always screamed 'look at how wacky/individual I am' to me.

Strange that they were available in four combinations Guess as the cars are made up of 4 colours they just got 4 separate 1 colour cars and swapped the bolt on stuff around to make 4 of them?

There was a golf equivalent as well wasn't there?
They do scream 'desperate for attention even if it's negative!' imho.

There’s one down the road from me that moves time to time. It’s a bit worse for wear though. Has anyone done the previous generation in this fashion? That would be a good shape for this
