Registering a car in the UK from Guernsey?

Hi guys,

I’ve recently purchased a car from a local auction that the original owner never bothered registering in the UK, despite driving it around for six years.

I was told by someone I really shouldn’t have listened to that all you do is MOT it, send off a V55/5 and jobs a good’un. It’s MOTd on the original plate which I know I can’t keep and I got the form filled out but realised there was something missing so had a look at the DVLA site and it’s just confused me even more.

Could someone give me the simple and clear process to getting a V5 for it please?

That’s the last thing I would do.

Why? I've called the DVLA a few times, they were friendly enough and very helpful on all occasions.

Because if you phone them without understanding the implications of what you’re asking, you could end up with problems. I’ve seen dozens of simple questions complicated and protracted just because someone asked the wrong question or gave them the wrong answer. Much better to first ask one of the hundreds of relevant club specialists that deal with DVLA all the time and have probably seen the exact same question before, or ask on a forum like this (as opposed to Facebook which is the same as asking 50 random people on your local high street for their informed opinion 😂).

So I guess it needs a NOVA first? Which is supposed to be within 14 days?

OK, call me stupid, but there's a difference between looking for answers in good faith, and trying to circumvent (tax) rules. I suppose MiniDan is in the first category?

I imported three vehicles from Jersey, but only ended up registering one once it was returned to the road.

It's correct to say that the entry into the NOVA system should be done within 14 days of a vehicle entering the country. And that the online info suggests there are hefty fines for not doing this. I however only realised after about 2 years and did it then with no consequence.

It was all pretty straightforward from memory. The system exists more for newer and high value cars where considerable tax is due.

I’ve had problems with speaking direct to DVLA before. I’ve had some very helpful people over the years but most have been more than useless and as people have said above they’ve caused more problems.

I did read about going to NOVA but the car has been here for years previously and it was bought through a local auction house with the original cardboard Guernsey registration booklet.

I wasn’t sure if I would have to inform HMRC because of the above but if I did I wouldn’t be liable for any payments to them because I’ve paid the tax on the auction.

I’ve since found a very helpful guide from DVLA (shock!) and it seems I just have to send off the form I’ve already filled in with the original vehicle documentation, the new MOT and a £55 payment and that should be that. Will see soon enough.
