So, What to say about this car!
It started life as a standard 1991 GT, that had been very well cared for.
The body is one of the best early cars I have seen. Never had any welding and doesn't need any. Sills, arches all the usual spots are in excellent condition, not a bubble of rust that I can see. Only rust I can find is a bubble spread from a chip on the edge of a door. Even has original windscreen with the reg etched in!
Paintwork is pretty good for the age, no scratches or big dents, some odd yellow marks on the front bumper, like something dripped on it once perhaps. Still a very presentable car, which could be made pristine without huge expenditure.
Interior is very clean. Rare leather seats have some cracks in, but are still super comfortable.
T bar roof doesn't leak. Still have the storage bags and interior covers.
Now the interesting bit!
To look at, this is a totally standard early car in really good condition. Get close and you notice it's not quite so standard!
It has had a fantastic conversion to a VW 110bhp TDI engine. Uses the VW gearbox, so no worries with gear ratios.
It does 60mpg, with performance pretty similar to the original engine!
The VAG clocks have been really nicely installed in the Toyota dash, you really wouldn't know it wasn't standard!
Every dash function in the VAG MFA works, fuel economy, the lot. It even has functional cruise control!!
There is a fast switch on the dash which changes the fuelling and boost to give a decent increase in power. It's instant, you can cruise along and then switch it on for an overtake if you wish.
"It's heavy, it will ruin it" I hear you cry! No, it's lighter than the original engine and box.
The power delivery of the TDI really suits the car. It's lovely to drive.
Only bad points I can think of. Sometimes the fuel gauge decides it doesn't want to work, but has always sorted it's self out again.
Gear change takes a bit of getting used to. 1st-2nd gate is quite close to 3rd-4th. My dad struggled with it sometimes, I haven't found it a problem.
Which brings me on to why it's for sale. This conversion was done by a friend of mine to a really high standard, and we always wanted to buy it when the opportunity arose. Unfortunately my dad is now just too old for it at 77, I think it's time for an automatic! I would like to take it on, but my wife seems to think I have enough. So reluctantly it's for sale. I am selling it for my dad, as he would rather not see people currently for obvious reasons.
