Has anybody heard of a 21 turbo engine being converted to a front engined RWD application? I know they've been used mid engined as the UN1 transaxle it uses as standard is one of the main choices in mid engined kit cars.
My dads old one made a reliable 385bhp which could be put to great use in a rear drive car.

It could, but you'll have to sort out a bell housing adaptor/clutch/gearbox etc
I'm not aware of anyone else that's tried, so I doubt you'll be able to get any help.

Theres a chap over on retrocarclub who did IIRC Tiz RWD yeah? Pretty sure its still FWD I'm afraid. PPC did an article on making your own bell-housing a while back, so you can pretty much mate any engine to any box if you want to spend the time and effort. |

Looks like its still fwd they're mounted like that standard.

is this engine from the volvo loves renault period, otherwise maybe a 940 box would fit..
but why use a renault engine? use a volvo lump and you are looking at the same power figures and probably spending less money.

I'm just exploring the options so far got Volvo turbo, Alfa V6, Renault 21 Turbo, BMW 535i, Saab Turbo lots of stuff that can make similar power. As I said originally my dad had a 385bhp 21 and we've still got some of the expensive and hard to get bits from it.

Yeh, it can be done, I did it with a mate of mine, we put one into a vitara.... goes really quite well now, especially with lots more boost and a 3" exhaust!! I suppose technically its actually four wheel drive, but its still close enough to what you asked!!
We used a espace bellhousing (bolts straight on - the espace used a na version of the same engine) then made an adaptor plate to attatch it to the standard vitara gearbox! We thought it would last about 5 mins, but it seems to have been slightly over engineered, it gets used hard, and its still going strong!!!
I suspect there will be a rwd gearbox that will bolt onto an espace bellhousing, but I'm afraid I'm no renault expert (unless you want to know about mk1 renault masters, in which case I'm your man.... i digress...)
We had to dry sump that one purely because the sump wanted to share the space with the front diff, and moving the diff seemed like too much work!!

There was also a Westfield or other LSIS with a Douvrin turbo v6 in the front and a UN1 transaxle in the back.
Didn't the Peugeot 505 use the same engine block (2.2 version IRC) as Renault 20? And the 21 use a further development of that engine.

pretty much any inline (not transverse) renault has a seperate bellhousing. whats ore the bell hold the release arm and cable. I've mounted one to a type 9 in the past to put a renault 21 2.1td lump in a mk1 capri...took about an hour to get the engine to mate to the box, and the 1.6 pinto capri clutch plate was the same size as the renault pressure cover. but yup, i agree, its not a great engine, but the thing is, you have the engine, better to make use of it |

Hey Stealthstylz do you know what was done to get that hp reliably? A lot lol. Was running custom rods and pistons, a lot of head work, Garrett T4, alcohol injection, aftermarket EFi. Cost a fortune and would have done more power if he hadn't stuck it under a tractor. My dad drives the same as me i.e flat out everywhere. He was driving home in the usual manner one evening, came round a blind bend and some dozy mare had run out of petrol in a nova saloon and left it just after the bend. My dad came round, sverved to miss it and hit a tractor/trailer combo. I'll have to dig out some pics of it the front end was about 12" off the floor at the front. |

I'm afraid I've got nothing to offer in terms of advice, but this: ....has all the potential to be an awesome Boso car. Move the leading edge of the front wings forwards 8" for instant sharknose, ditch the round lights in favour of some Chevette ones (set at an angle), some more fibre glass additions, super lows and you're there. Oh, and some uber wide SSR's! |

They did make the R21 as a 4wd Quadra model.... Couldn't that just be used to power just the rear wheels??
