So, my new whip takes an ages to warm up and then when it is, if I go fast, it starts to cool again.
I'm guessing its a faulty stat and i'm gonna change it tonight, but I was just wondering if there's anything else that could cause this that I should be worried about???

I think you mean over-cooling.... Thermostat would be my first port of call.

As seth says thermostat would be the most obvious culprit. Is it on the rather nice Celica in the pic below?

If the fan's stuck 'on', that'll do the trick nicely as well....

Check the stat, if it's ok then block off half the rad while the weather is cold

Before I saw the car I was going to say that it could just be down to the cold weather (thinking old british car with a viscous van and a lump of card in front of the rad for the winter here ) When I saw it was a toyota I would say the stat. I remember the outer cage of the stat actually snapped on my AE86 when I was coming back from a rally at otterburn in the winter many moons ago and could not get the temp out of the blue on the way home so it ran with the 5th injector on all the way home and used loads of fuel. Not sure location of stat on these engines but on the 4AGE they are under the inlet and a bit of a pig to get to and you have to take car when it comes to bleeding as they were prone to air locking. If they air lock they revs used to climb over 1500 then drop to 800 all the time on idle.
