Hey all, I was hoping someone could give me advice for my Capri's disc brakes. Its a 2.0 but for some reason (I'm guessing someone robbed the 2.0 struts) It has 3.0 legs and discs which you can't upgrade the discs cheaply. I didnt know this 3 years ago and bought some new Burton Top Mounts/lowering springs which a garage fitted to get the Car driving in a straight line.... fast forward and last year I fitted new m16 Rally Sport callipers, braided hoses and Borg & Beck Pads which helped it to stop a little bit better but I avoided replacing the discs due to cost. Its ok on short trips but after driving for a little while the brakes feel rough which I'm guessing is these horrible old 3.0 "Top Hat" discs. I'm also getting a "chirping" noise after a while too. Thats the Pads i'm guessing but I just want a bit of advice before I spend my hard earned. My thinking is: Option 1, I could buy new top hat 3.0 discs from Tickover £170 (maybe do the shoes too), have a fully revamped system that works like the 70s intended. Option 2, I could try and track down new legs but this would take more money away from other stuff (head is leaking oil, weird noise I havent tracked down yet) so maybe this isnt worth it for a Car I just want to cruise around in and do the odd long trip in. Option 3, is I've been offered some second hand drilled disks on facebook which I guess might stop it better?? they're for a mk1 3.0 but look like they fit all models. The only thing is will I be in a better position with this option? I'm guessing someone drilled these or had them drilled. Option 4, is taking these discs to a machine shop and seeing if they will shave a bit off? Looks like there about 10 or 11mm ish left on there. What do you think? I don't expect a Capri to stop like a new Car just looking for what you would do in my position as I do need to do other jobs on this Car to have something I can use properly.

They don't look like your getting full pad contact. I don't know capris but looks like your missing 30% of contact and only really getting 50% properly.
New discs (and pads as they will be worn weird now) should help loads of have thought.
Might not need upgraded parts if your currently not getting full stopping power from the stock set up.

I've machined a few discs in the past. I would not attempt those, totally fubar.

Cheers guys! really appreciate that!!! don't want to waste my hard earned so will just get new . I thought they looked bad but I've never messed with discs so don't know. Someone offered these drilled 3.0 Discs . Not sure how much yet but any advice with something like this. I don't want to skimp on saftey but wondering if these will help me out stopping? These are the cheapist ones. Unfortunately a lot of places sell 3.0 discs but they are not the correct "top hat" ones. www.tickover.co.uk/shop/contents/en-uk/p1620.html

TBH £150 for a pair of discs isn't bad. I wouldn't touch those drilled ones with a barge pole, they have been drilled far too close to the outer edge.

Would a good pair of 2.0l struts in Rochester be of any use? I know they're for sale, can ask how much he wants. A pair of Capri non vented discs to suit is £42 from Rally Design, and you can reuse your callipers. That ought to cost you less than the 3.0l discs you've found, and future proof the car.
The orphan 3.0l stuff was always a dead end, most of us swapped them for ordinary Capri struts, or 2.8i if we could afford them.

If they're fairly reasonable that could be a good option. I'm guessing that would be struts with the stub axles and hubs? I need to do some research on standard struts and whats possible. Can you reuse the callipers with spacers for vented disks? I seem to recall that from somewhere? I guess I'd have to buy a bearing kit for them along with discs and possibly re use parts from my struts?... this is me thinking out out haha.

You can get a pair of 2.8i vented discs and calipers for £125 from rally design, at that price I wouldn't mess around with secondhand parts.

Can you fit 2.8 stuff to 3 litre struts? We've looked for a while at 2.8 bilsteins, but they seem to fetch anything up to about £450! 3.0 struts don't make half that.

From what i'm reading 3.0 struts are out there on their own. Apparently the back plate is different. I read you can get a machined hub that allows you to fit different discs but they're quite rare and doesnt look like they're made anymore. Is the 2.8 calliper different ? I know you can get spacers to fit 2.8 discs for normal struts.

The std 2.8 calliper is the right width for vented discs so doesen't need a spacer.

The hub, bearing, stub axle and disc are all different and not interchangeable. Best thing to do with a 3.0l strut was always to bin it for a standard Capri one - 2.8i if you could afford them as the thicker piston was a good upgrade. These days, the cost of used bodies and new inserts(necessary) is far more than the benefit is worth. You can split a stock M16 calliper for a spacer kit, but the saving over buying the new discs and callipers is small and probably not worthwhile.

I like my setup a lot. 2.8i lowered springs, Gaz adjustable inserts all in 2.0 struts. I've never adjusted the gaz inserts bar initial set up so reckon I'd go for some monroe or other brand thats cheaper if I was to do it again
For brakes I've still got the standard 2.0 brakes as they've always worked well only mod was putting braided lines in. Would be easy to upgrade to 2.8i brakes but id probably now go for something with a bit more surface area on the pad if I was to upgrade them.
On my old capri I had the same setup but I swapped to 2.8i brakes but never got to the bottom of some vibrations so have resisted so far on my current one. I suspect was some cheap vented and grooved disks
