I wish I had the money/time to backwards hot rod something. A Jag XJ with 50s truck axles would be hilarious (or even funnier a 2007 Ranger with 50s Ford F1 axles and engine.

furthest I've gone was train to Glasgow, jump in a Triumph Spitfire 1500 that my Dad bought and we just left for Stoke-on-Trent. We thought the dial bulbs didnt work but it turned out they were so dim we could only see them in the pitch black 😂

An mg b series swap into an mx5 would be a funny (and cheap) way into a reverse hot rod, a cold rod? 🤔

My longest new car collection was getting a one way train ticket from Coventry to Kent (I forget where exactly), then driving to my parents in Suffolk before then driving on back to Coventry. Not the longest journey in the world but a bit of a leap of faith considering the car was a £700, 200k mile, V12 BMW 7 series

longest collection was from Berwick to Essex, it was the mx5 though so fairly low risk.

Maddest was probably the Lotus, from hereford, hadn't been used much for a couple of years but got home(just) diff flange nut had come loose.

Also picked up a series 2 landrover from exmoor, I don't think it had dome more than 4 or 5 miles in the last 20 years (though the old boy I bought it off did have it serviced), it actually got better and better as the journey went on and things freed up cruised round the m25 at 60, did get through a gallon of oil a large part of which ended up all over my dad's car who followed me home though.

A few decent length collections:

Longest - BMW e30 325i from London to Poznan. It was winter, first time I drove a LHD car, snow across Germany and Poland, ancient set of Nankang summers on the car and the alternator packed up just over the Polish border.

That was quite the exciting trip.





Porsche 911 SC from near Heathrow to Dublin. This should have been easy but the ferries kept getting cancelled so instead of leaving from Fishguard, I aimed for Holyhead, which then got cancelled so I had to go to Stranraer. My other half was with me on this one and we had to get back for work so it was against the clock all round.

Me, HARDCORE and Philip mantaphil (the one with the monza, not monzaphil who has a manta. Obvs. ) went to France for a car for me. Easily the best going-to-get-a-car road trip I’ve done.
Bangin’ french language Senegalese rap on the radio interspersed with totally uncut American hardcore gangsta rap was a particular highlight, as was the terrible french driving standards and motorway service stations with food better than most restaurants over here, it fulfilled all stereotypes and more. Would deffo do again.

Far, far more enjoyable than driving to Manchester and back in the rain with my mate George to pickup another car, which took nearly as long as was menorabel as a particularly awful trip.
Or the trip to Bristol from Norfolk with another mate to pick up a olds cutlass lowrider than took 18hrs and we nearly died multiple times.

I had a phase of buying stuff from the far side of Manchester despite living in Sussex...

A Peugeot 205 from Oldham, Mercedes W123 280ce from York and then my Volvo 245 from Accrington.

That involved a train from SW London after an afternoon kids party, transit through Manchester at 9pm on a Saturday night arriving at 10pm in the p***ing rain. Then a 5hr drive home, arriving at 4am... I then discovered ancient tyres, inner tubes etc etc, fairly miraculous it made it in one piece

The guy who bought it drove it straight to Holyhead and on to Dublin

When I lived in Chicago I drove to Atlantic City NJ for two E28; one was an M5 or that would be ludicrous

Manchester to Hull to collect my Saab 900. I took my son who was about ten at the time.

We detoured on the way back to go over the Humber bridge and deployed quite a bit of boost.

There was even a brief moment where I thought the electrics had died because I accidentally hit the night panel button.
