Hi everyone, I'm after a bit of help with an Austin Healey paint code. I can't get paint made up because it's from 1953 and I don't know what the modern code would be to match it. I also don't have an original panel to colour match. What I do have is the original Austin paint code and ICI paint code (very retro) : Austin - Coronet Cream - 253A71 and 53A71 ICI - 2583 Does anybody know the modern version for this colour? any help would be greatly appreciated cheers

Hi, Having the codes is not really going to help you to any great degree because the way paint is mixed is differently. One is by weight and one is by percentage, so you're not going to get an exact match but that's not really a problem if as you say you don't have an existing panel to match against.
As you have that colour chart, go to your local paint factors and ask the man on the mixing scheme his advice for a modern colour match. if he's any good he will know or ask if you can go through his chips and match it yourself whilst sitting quietly in the corner. A modern colour code will help going forward with any repeat requirements.
A good man on the scheme is worth his weight in gold.
As an aside, a number of years ago our local factors had two mixers one good one not so much. Most of the vehicle painters when they went in after paint their first question was "Who's on the scheme?" If the answer was "Blind Pugh" They would say "I'll try again tomorrow".

Hi Colin,
thanks for that advice. I've already been to a guy I know about mixing the colour but his reply was 'no chance', he's slightly annoyed me because I know it's possible even though it's a difficult one.
I've got two other places / people I can try and I guess in the end mixing custom colour might be the way to go or like you said look through colour chips and choose one as close as possible.
Cheers

May be the Austin Counties Car Club could help or ask on the Austin Counties Cars Facebook page. Also Craftmaster Paints claim to offer most post war colours in cellulose, 2K & even brushing coach enamel.

PPG list this formula but not the code for it.. I've also looked on Akzonobel Mixitcloud but no joy.. You could ring round your local bodyshops/paint suppliers and ask if they use Nexa/PPG and ask if they can mix this up for you. They will charge you for the mix (minimum of 250ml IIRC) so you can see the colour for yourself. For an additional fee they could do you a spray out card for it.. *edited to say: I note this code contains the ICI colour code as the code suffix so this is likely to be correct but the twist is that ICI was acquired by AkzoNobel but my AN system doesn't list it while the PPG system does but they're Akzonobels competitor... I've had a manual search for MG and rover to see if there are any crossovers but no joy on that front either. None of my systems list Austin as a manufacturer, presumably because they're too new .. That's all I got, hope it helps!!

Thanks for the great replies. Here is what I've got so far. I managed to mix up a custom colour and did a test on a random petrol flap, grey primer underneath but I think really light grey primer would actually be best. The colour isn't far off compared to some pictures of an Austin I found online. Here are the paint codes and quantities for the mix if anyone is interested

I forgot to say the petrol flap isn't lacquered which would make a difference in appearance. Here are the sikkens codes.
