How to clean a plastic coolant tank? No longer clear, but a muddy brown!

I've had decent results with boiling hot water and a dishwasher tablet. When it's cooled down I added rice and gave it a shake to scrub the inside.

I'd try dilute phosphoric acid. It will eat up any rust stains. I don't think you will ever make it look new tho the plastic yellows permanently.

Had good results with warm water and a cleaning tabblet for false teeth.. (stolen from my parents ;-) ).

Same as a couple above, either steradent (there are others available) or a dishwasher tablet. Also had success with bleach tablets, I've bought a load from aldi in plastic tubs and they're brilliant for making up different concentrations.

I stuck some non sharp gravel in it with the cleaning solution and gave it a shake, found the chemicals alone did not get the gunk off

Find someone with an ultrasonic tank - it'll come up like new, aside from any age related plastic degradation.

Thanks, will try this. It's almost 20 years old though, so may have to grin and bear it!
