I feel like I might be coming to the point where I need to seriously look as selling one of my Cars. Its not something I'm doing yet but the problem is I'm quite attached to both of them and I know that either one I sell I'd struggle to buy again due to rarity and values of Classic Fords going mad. Also, I don't have a modern Car myself which makes things very tricky.
The situation is I use them locally for work and general driving about but have to borrow my misses Car for bigger trips and its not going down that well (i've done this for a while now) and also I feel like its stopping me from doing trips/taking work now i've moved back up north. I used to have a modern but when I scrapped that 5 years ago, used the Escort as a daily and sneaked in a rough looking Capri which I have done up slowly to an alright standard. I was out driving the Capri in what can only be described as a monsoon the other day and thought... I don't know if I can do this through the winter. It was like guiding a bed down the motorway. The Escort is a bit better for this but realistically I need something I can use up and throw away for this kind of driving.
The Cars are
My Escort mk3 is a 1.1 Popular. I always wanted a Red 3 door base model and this is as close to it as I can get. I've owned it for 9 years and its been restored twice (once when I got it and just recently due to living outside). IF I sold the Escort I guess I could buy a cheap modern and put some money into the Capri (but how far should you go). The downside is I'd struggle to find one again in the future and if I did see another like mine, would someone want silly money for it. Also I'd probably see this one modded up which would probably annoy me. I think theres only 2 1985 Populars taxed according to 'how many left'.
I guess the cons are its a bit boring compared to the Capri and more expensive to insure/tax. Parts are generally cheap but harder to find. I only own both Cars as I knew i'd never find another Escort like this if I sold it to buy another classic.
The Capri is a 2.0 Ghia. years ago when I was in Uni I drove one and missed my chance to buy one due to concentrating on my career and owning the Escort later on. I was supposed to buy a modern Car and last minute bought this one as I thought prices were rising. I've done most things to it myself and learned a lot of lessons the hard way, it was rough. This year I've got it to a point where its mechanically sound but will need some body work in the future (the Escort is better). It looks a lot better now though and i love the Ghia interior that i tracked down, doubt i'd ever see that again. I've just replaced the speakers and when you crank the stereo and hear the 2.0 pinto roaring it feels pretty good. If I sold the Capri hopefully I could get a bit more than if I sold the Escort so buy a slightly nicer cheaper modern and save some money (The Escort doesnt really need anything spending on it at the moment).
I'm not too bothered about originality with this car (its an obsession with the Escort) so do wonder about making it faster, ride and stop better etc but then again... Ive spent a few years messing about with it and have no driveway since we moved so can I realistically cant do this at the moment anyway. Also I wonder If I should really be concentrating on my carear again and not surfing ebay for Capri bits constantly and worrying If I can get to work or not.
Option 3 is selling both Cars and starting fresh. Again I wonder If I would regret this as I could go out and get a nice Capri if I sold them both, might be scraping the barrel getting a modern too but I'd struggle to find another Red mk3 Escort thats better than mine (not that mine is a show car they're just rare).
I did hope that I could find storage for one or both at a reasonable price but its just not happening and with this dodgy expensive winter coming, not a great move for a self employed musician.
The other thing Is I rent the Escort out for filming sometimes. The Capri hasnt had any interest weirdly but I did think about turning this into more of a business to support owning them. It might be a bit more stress than its worth but a little side note.
Here are some pros and cons.
lastly on top of borrowing my misses Car, she really doesnt like either of mine and worries for my safety on the open road... fair enough. She likes the Escort a bit more but neither are cars we can share. I thought maybe I could get something a bit fun like an older Mini Cooper, Z4 or Mx5. Something we car both enjoy rather than me just borrowing her Car.
Any advice haha!!
