Has anyone else had to get a windscreen replaced via their insurance on an older car recently, what was your experience?
The screen in my TR7V8 has a 2 foot long crack in it, my insurance is linked to Autoglass who appear to be hopeless, all I can get out of them after 5 weeks and numerous calls is that it's with their concierge department to source a screen(who can'tbe contacted). A 30 second search with google pulls up half a dozen places who have a screen so they are not difficult to find.
I'm going to email their chief exec probably won't get me anywhere but I can't think of much else.

I think I'd go with the email, and point out that the screen is readily available from other sources. Iirc they can point you in the direction of their ' approved ' repairers, but can't actually force you to use them Of course I could be lying, and also you may be into the territory where you have to pay and claim back, which can be a nightmare

Would it not be worth going back to your insurance company and seeing if they can use an alternative? Probably be cheaper for them than what Autoglass will bill them anyway!

Pretty sure they did the windscreen on my Volvo 740.
My experience was pretty positive, although it took 3 vans worth of screen fitters to get it all sorted. They broke several trim clips holding the stainless windscreen trim, and replaced them with new as part of the job.

Thanks, I think if I don't hear anything this week I'm going to see if the insurance will pay if I go to a local outfit.

I had issues with Autoglass denting my car roof (modern) and denying it, I complained the the insurance company (NFU) and they sorted it out and gave me some money in compensation for the trouble.

I had an American postal jeep that needed a windscreen fitting when it arrived from america i ordered a windscreen then phoned every autoglass type company in my area to fit it and all said sorry only do bonded windscreens don't know any one that can do the rubber sort of fitting and that was just a straight flat window in the end i fitted it myself so i don't envy you, if you can get a windscreen yourself just buy it and get on with it i am sure you could do it.

It is a bonded screen, I'm fine fitting rubber seal ones but no idea or tools for a bonded one.

Oh really didn't think it would be bonded, sorry.

Nothing to be sorry about, In some respects Leyland were ahead of their time, apparently it was a strip of adhesive with a wire embedded in it which you connected to a power supply and heated up to bond the screen in, that said my 73 Elan plus 2 also has a bonded screen, that must have been one of the first. On the other hand my 87 range rover has a rubber seal, I also remember Escorts and Fiestas having rubber seal well into the 80's

Yes on a 81 Matra Murena, claim started May 2022. My insurance gave me the contact details for Autoglass and I started the claim. After 2 weeks of nothingness I managed to talk to somebody at Autoglass who knew the system. In Basic terms its split up into day to day vehicles and specialist types you need to get onto the specialist dept. I cant remember the name of the Dept. but once i spoke to them the claim progressed within the day albeit I had to wait for the screen to be made ( 14 weeks), they gave me regular updates.
The guy who did the install had a copy of the same installation paperwork i had found on line. I supplied the trim piece which was required in my case. The guy knew it was required and if i hadn't supplied it it wouldn't of been sorted. Over all once with the right Dept. very good experience just make sure any trim or extras are accounted for.

Thanks,
I think the trim will be Ok, it's quite a substantial stainless trim around the top and sides which is all there and a black painted metal cover over the bottom held on by the wiper spindles, when I know they are coming I will take the bottom one off and re-paint it.

The guy who did it told me no corrosion of any concern and he used some magic primmer in places where there was bare metal.
He also made it clear before hand that he would give me the nod if there were any problem that would be better rectified now instead of fitting the windscreen. All round he seemed classic friendly.

You can go much older that that for bonded screens, GM started using it on full production models in 1961. By 64 or so most of their production (except trucks) was using it.

I'm having similar issues with Autoglass for my Bentley. They have referred my claim to an internal department who are not directly contactable and also do not make any outward contact as I haven't heard from them in over a month. I've called numerous times and have been told somebody will contact me - they haven't, so I'm stuck in limbo with an unusable car.
I've just called my insurance company to deal with it - they're not very happy and have escalated to their own complaint channel with Autoglass. Let's see what happens, I'm not holding my breath!

My experience with Autoglass was fine once the fitter turned up. He was on time, competent, efficient and professional - the exact opposite of everybody else(and there were a lot of phonecalls) I dealt with.

When I called them about replacing the screen in my Volvo 340, the chap I spoke to actually recommended I phoned a local independent screen firm, which was run by an ex Autoglass employee who had more experience in dealing with older vehicles, especially those with chrome trims.
This guy turned out to be really reasonable and did a great job.

Hi Kevin
Normally insurance companies differentiate between glass and collision claims and separate teams for dealing with them. It may be something as daft as Autoglass cannot purchase the correct replacement through their suppliers and they don't have the facility to order one off ebay etc because of the way they set up their purchase legers and accounts.
In which case it might be worth asking them if you can use a local body shop (who will be able to order one from just about anywhere) and sub out the fitting. You may even get a free wash out of it! Just make extra sure that you are paying the glass claim excess to the bodyshop and not your full excess. As it will cause delays at handover wife they insist you have to pay £300 Instead of £50 or whatever..
Don't worry if it's their own approved repairer, the whole thing will essentially be subbed out like a lock set or similar..
Hope that makes sense!?
