So I don't know if you've heard of MidJourney or Dall-e but they are these bonkers new AI tools that can create images dreamt up by computers based on typing in just words as a prompt. Like 'A Land Rover that looks like an F1 racecar' or 'a camper van made from a Porsche 911' I've been having a bit of fun making weird and wonderful retro combos for days now and heck I thought I'd share them. They're not perfect and kind of funky in places—but also pretty awesome and give me loads of improper project ideas. [To me it's just crazy that connected computers 'dreamt up' these images by looking at millions of of random images and then create these new ones in a matter of seconds. Maybe we're all doomed?] What do you think? Any amazing combinations of styles / body shapes you can think of? (It works best with the most iconic-shaped cars) Land Rover Racecar F1 2CV 911 Camper Van Fiat Panda Jeep F1 Camper Van

I've got art friends that are a little obsessed with MJ, I looked at the technology behind it (because I'm a programmer, so of course I want to know how it works) and it is clever stuff, and doesn't work AT ALL how I expected it to.
Anyway

I was going to start a thread about this! Came across automotive.ai on Instagram and didn't like any of it. Their 70 years of Audi TT, 50 years of the Smart FourTwo and 40 years of the BMW X5 threads were genuinely unsettling. I showed my wife the TT one as she's got a mk1 TT and she was like 'huh, I thought they came out in '97, where's my one?' It's like Uncanny Valley, but with cars rather than Sofia the robot or Nikki Tutorials.

Uncanny is totally the word - I haven't seen the threads you mention but I will check them out!

And this is 'a 1950s smart car' in Midjourney. Not sure why it's made them paintings and not photorealistic like the Dall-E images.

ajpriceThere's loads of different rendering algorithms in midjourney - you need to use --testp --creative after your prompts and it should look photographic. Adding in things like 'telephoto' '4k' 'dslr' also helps. edit - also they'll always be square unless you specify an aspect ratio with --ar 4:3 or --ar 16:9 etc (any ratio should do)

HoTWire Well it's not as extreme as I hoped, and looks like an E30 had a kid with a Corolla but... edit - ooh some nicer screenprint style versions! [mashes 'create version' button again]

On the internet, you can type in words, and then computers make images based on the words is about the gist of it. I thought I'd get them to do pictures of old cars all smushed together

As a professional artist, I have very mixed feelings about these generators. They are a lot of fun to play with and they are an excellent idea-sketching tool, allowing you to visualise something much more instantly than if you tried to do it manually. It's just important to remember they couldn't exist without all of the manually created artwork that's preceded them from which they pull their samples to create these new images.
It will be interesting to see how the technology develops and what it allows us to create in the future.

On the professional graphic design side, I can see why it would be a worry, but personally I don't see it that way. It's still quite techy as it is now to get the right text in for the image you want out (especially Midjourney with the codes as I found with the 50s smart car painting image it did), but whenever there's a simpler version, it's an equivalent to stock images for times when Shutterstock just hasn't got that image you want of a duck riding a bicycle, or as a starter for you to get into with Photoshop and make what you want it to be.

Yesterday I was sitting at home with a mildly busted knee and found I could get an ai drawing thing on my phone. That pretty much sorted the day out. Sometimes it does cars well, sometimes not. For some reason it seems to help if you add the words 'monster truck'. So, 'vw beetle monster truck' A car it does do quite well is the cube, so add monster truck and... Then I entered the world of silly starting with 'c3po bus' 😅
