Mk1 golf cabriolet clipper. It is 1990 big bumper model in paprika red, 117k on the clock.
Bought this back in 2007, so have owned it for 15 years. It was a present for the wife. Ran it for a good few years without issue, but haven’t used it for probably the last 7 or 8 years. It has been dry stored ever since. Bodywork is all pretty good and looks solid, one of the last mot’s the mechanic commented on how solid it was underneath. The paint however, is really dull and crazed on the bonnet.
The hood is dark blue canvas and in good condition. The interior also is in good condition. I’ve de tatted it and have slowly been replacing things with standard items, but it has aftermarket 15” 7 spoke alloys that I spent a long time taking flaking paint off the face and hand polishing the faces of them.
The steering wheel I have replaced with a momo race steering wheel, but do have the original somewhere.
The reason it was parked is a fuelling issue. I have done a lot to it, replacing many parts on the fuel system. This includes the fuel pump, vapour unit, filters, changed the carb for a new Weber twin choke, and the main culprit being the fuel filler neck, along with stripping the distributor and replacing the hall sender unit etc.
I have also changed many other items (I’ve listed all the work I’ve done to the car in a folder) including plugs, leads etc and given the car many oil and filter changes. Rocker cover I’ve removed, cleaned up and re sprayed and fitted a new gasket as it was weeping.
It will sit and idle all day long, but when driven it will cut out after a couple of miles. There was a lot of debris in the tank, that I tried cleaning out but in my opinion it needs dropping and either thoroughly cleaning out or replacing as I believe there is still debris in there that is being sucked up to the sender unit causing it to cut out. The sender unit is also broken on the plastic part it attached to the tank, and needs repairing again (I’ve done it once but over time it has come apart again where I bonded it. These are difficult to get hold of and I am not sure if another sender from a different model (polo etc) would fit or not.
I don’t want to sell it, I would rather keep it and get it running again but the Mrs wants to sell as we are trying to run two businesses and don’t have time and spiralling costs involved things are difficult at the moment.
So with that in mind, any ideas what it might be worth (I only have pictures on old devises at the moment)
