Forgive me if theres a post on this somewhere but I'm trying to find some old Car rental pictures from the 70s/80s. Owning two Fords from each era and being used to modern hire cars, I thought it would be interesting to see what was available back then. The only companies I can find are Arnold Clark, Avis, Godfrey Davis and Europcar but not many photo. I'm sure you could rent standard stuff like Escorts or Astras but, could you rent interesting Cars as standard like Capri's and Mantas maybe? I remember in the mid 90s my Dad renting an M reg Fiesta and a SAO Penza from somewhere in Stoke-on-Trent. I remember us finding that one amusing as it had a novelty foot shaped accelerator pedal... it was all a bit backstreet, God knows how the insurance worked.

Where Hertz not about back then? Seem to recall back in the day it was used as a bit of a Cockney rhyming slang term, as in “look at that fella, hes’s Hertz van rental”

My memory vaguely tells me that more main dealers used to do rentals as well, possibly before more of the rental firms came into the game - I definitely remember going with my dad to get a hire car for his work (maybe while his was being serviced, or between company cars) from Reg Tildesely Ford Main Dealers in Walsall, probably late 80s, and I am pretty sure we had a hire car from the Rover Main Dealer in Walsall early 90s too

Yeh I hired a van from the local Ford dealer in my village but that was early noughties. Funnily enough though it was a vw lt not a transit, and a right pos it was too.

Hertz were big back then. I went on holiday to Bavaria when I was about 12 with my mate's family in about 1977 or '78. His Dad worked for Hertz and I remember being really impressed that we went in what was then a brand new Mk.2 Granada 2.8 Ghia which he got from Hertz. First time I was ever in a car that did 100mph. Funnily enough I still remember the yellow 'Hertz No. 1 Club' stickers in the back window.

Currently driving a 1972 BMW 1602 as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

I think there were a lot more local independent type rental places back then, some local guy with a few random cheapies from the local auctions or something.

I only remember my Dad having to hire a car twice in those days, both Mk2 Escorts. The first was a blue one from Kenning, and the second was a yellow one which I'm fairly certain was from Hertz. Certainly when he needed a van for us to move house, that was Kenning.
