Buying a hilux / double cab pickup?

Hi everyone. The time has come to scratch the double cab itch. I really fancy a hilux but, the values seem all over the place? Can anyone recommend a decent year/model which is decent value or an alternative please? I was hoping to spend sub £4k and I have realistic expectations! Thanks

As long as your intended use allows. Drop the pickup idea and by a late 90's Landcruiser 90 series instead. They are fantastic trucks for the money and actually have as much space as a pickup once the passenger seats are folded up.

I did write an article of my experience owning one that i used as a daily, work horse and off-road weekend toy. Just go for the pre D4D engine as its mechanical and will happily run on 50/50 veg oil.

I wouldn't touch a 90's japanese 4x4 that cheap, it will be rustier than a landrover.

Make sure you arent inside a CAZ or ULEZ zone.

Chances of getting a decent Hilux for sub £4k these days seems slim, they have been exported for years (mine went to Nigeria!)

Things like the Ford Ranger seem to be cheaper & in better condition but I don't know how good they are. The older Vauxhall Brava/Izuzu Rodeo always looked kinda cool.

a Ford ranger that would be in that price range is basically a re badged Mazda pickup.
I’ve driven one of those, but only on a (large) farm in SA. It drove ok but didn’t get up to any real speed in it. The others in that price range would be Mitsubishi l200 and Nissan navara.
Drove both of those at a dealers once as flirted with the idea of getting a pickup. The Mitsubishi drove ok but was gutless. The navara was too softly sprung but seemed more powerful. I didn’t bother in the end.

I think Navaras in this price bracket have a reputation for chassis rust, from the inside.

very narrow window with them, earlier ones did head gaskets I think (could be wrong was a while ago I was looking at the) and later ones used to snap the chassis in half. Think the sweet spot I was looking at was around 04-05.
