I'm alive again.
Looks like this is a roll over again, but that is all fine, just a place to chat about stuff.
Anything interesting going on last weekend?
I did 22k steps (19km) on Saturday and 19k (15km) on Sunday, and I had a golf cart thing for both days. Still good practice for Glastonbury at the end of the month where I'll do similar distances (no golf cart sadly).

What tent did you get, out of interest? Did it make much difference? I’ve been looking for a white or silver tent for years, to reflect off the sun at events like Le Mans and the Gathering.

What tent did you get, out of interest? Did it make much difference? I’ve been looking for a white or silver tent for years, to reflect off the sun at events like Le Mans and the Gathering. I've tried two of these. - One off a mate that I borrowed ; a simple 2 man tent - What I would end up buying, after weighing up options and convenience - A pop-up 2 man version of the tent. I couldn't quite justify the extra cash for the 3 man Both are similar, and my friend's may possibly be easier to get into and out of. That said, mine is far quicker to put it, albeit it has to be done with care, which the instructions do give a good point on how to do it. Now to what we need to know. Does it improve camping, and make much of a difference? Yes is the long and short of it. The light cut out is very impressive. It doesn't cut everything out, but it does do the vast majority of it. It looks almost like stars within the tent during the day, with a slight haze of light present but nothing much to speak of. Bright mornings become a thing of the past. They can get warm inside still but far less than other tents. If I am honest, mine was not really warm during the daytime when at RRW last weekend. Coupled with the down sleeping bag, self-inflating matress and ear defenders, you sleep as good as you can in a tent in all honesty? Are there downsides? Of course! -Almost all of the time you'll need a light inside, as it's that dark with the tent fully zipped up. Decathlon do some nice USB/wind-up rechargeable items which are spot on, as do other camping outlets -It can be very bright, when you emerge from the tent! In a house, it's a gradual release of light. With this, it's basically one big hit of light on your eyes as you emerge from the tent!

I had such a good time at the Weekender I've only been back for less than 30 hours and I've bought 2 more projects to not have time for. Nothing of value just for curse word and giggles.

Only managed to get to the Sunday of the Weekender this year but was still a great show, plenty of variety, I may chuck a thread up of my favourite picks at some point. Has also given me a bit of a mojo boost to get back in the garage! Daily Almera failed it's MOT, nothing too major and it should be sorted tomorrow, it's well overdue a detail and is coming up to needing a service so I'll have to lavish a bit more attention on it soon Nice moment for me at the Weekender was spotting a set of wheels that I'm 99% sure I refurbed and sold a year or two ago, now on an MX5

What happened to that dragster you had a couple of years ago? I've still got it. Chances of it getting done are slim to nil as I've completely lost the love for drag racing for various reasons, but yet I'm stuck with several tens of thousands of pounds worth of parts that as a complete vehicle is worth very little, but I'm not in a financial position to let it go for anywhere near what I paid for it, so it's in limbo.

Couple of fairly significant cars sold recently which led to a bit of discussion amongst mates It's pretty well known that the "JDM tax" has gone crazy over the past few years, but I struggle to justify £100k more for an R33 Skyline over the only road going TVR Cerbera Speed 12 in existence Don't think I'd have believed these values when I was playing with both cars on Gran Turismo 2 back in the day 😂 And back at a more sensible level, this caught my attention today, needs a clutch though which seems to be at least 2-3k in itself, worth the risk?...

Shame, maybe one day. I haven't been into drag racing for decades. I really should get myself up to Santa Pod again one weekend.

Yeah, its not costing me anything to store it and I don't need the money so it can just sit there till I either have a ruthless streak and sell it as parts or put it back together. If I could have a relaxing weekend at the pod that would be great, but I just get hassled by people for help/advice and I can't be arsed.

Before Covid we were looking at Maserati Gran Turismos as actual sensible family cars. I did loads of reading up on them (they're based on the Quattroporte, or the other way around, I can't remember now) and they're genuinely a good proposition. Some stuff is insane - you could get Tarox to build you brakes cheaplier than you could buy them even from a motor factor's - but most stuff is sensible and easily available. If you can pull the gearbox yourself I bet the clutch is from an Iveco or something!

I was really looking forward to seeing your dragster project progress as well but totally get it. Was really interesting reading the history of it. I was down at santa pod last weekend for doorslammers and had a great day, but nobody knows me so leisurely wandering about is easy 🤣

I think most of the GranTurismos had the zf autobox which must help with costs, certainly cheaper than a clutch every 40k miles Just looked at brakes and wow 😂 certainly not cheap, I suppose if the cars get cheap enough, people will find the more ingenious solutions to expensive parts. On a similar note to the GranTurismo, I'd not really noticed before how many Aston Martin DB9's are now hovering around the £20k mark... Could barely buy a mk4 supra for that these days!

I shouldn't have gone to check Facebook marketplace, I knew they were cheap but didn't realise this cheap 😅 It might be a straight 6 auto XJS in a fancy dress with ford/Mazda parts bin bits, but damn it's a tempting thought..

I did see someone describe buying one is an initial down payment on a 10k a year subscription plan. Which made me laugh, also part of the reason I don't own one.

...and off the back of that, you bought a 996 instead? I love that quote, though. I'm stealing that. I think it'd be interesting to do a running costs comparison between the Italians and the Germans. I also wonder if the snobbery I perceive from the Italian mob is real or not - buying a 964 from an enthusiast who's done a ton of work and upgrades feels 'safe', whereas buying a 355 from an enthusiast who's spannered on it themselves feels 'Russian Roulettey'. Doubly so a Maserati...

...and off the back of that, you bought a 996 instead? £1.5k a year is my average on the 996, it is an 80k+ mile car that need a biiiig old service when I first got it.

Depends on the BMW or VAG. HoTWire’s analogy is a good one mind you. E90 M3 and E60 M5 costs are quite scary, but then they are also quite the car : it’s also one reason why I don’t own an M5 Touring, as much as I have debated one over the decade. I used to think my M3 was very pricey to run, and yes it has pricey bits. All things considered, it could be worse, but I do also save a lot as I work on the car myself where I can.my figures aren’t far off H0twire’s. Going cheap on the brakes as an interesting one, and I own a car where folks do exactly that now, in increasing proportions (the M3), and it’s been done far more so on the previous generation. You sometimes do get decent cheaper solutions, but not always. Given what I’ve found with my car (I’ll write up about my findings one day in my thread) and how folks moan the brakes are curse word on my type of car, you are left unsurprised at times. Without going down the rabbit hole, using my M3 as an example, BMW wouldn’t just throw on floating rotors for the sake of it, and use motorsport compound pads, if it was simpler to throw on some Brembo 4 pots. Same for the E36. The “cheap” fix on mine for anyone wondering is to fit 330i pads and go with non-floating vented discs. They are about 40% of the price.
