Since I don't do social networks I might be just a little late to the party or I missed something completely? There is a growing number of pictures showing cars with a certain paint style I don't even know the terminus for. I suggested comic style when I first saw these pics and asked for it in SSE:
A few users responded and I was sent to hoodedreepers thread where he showed this: The next change was an experiment. I had seen on Facebook some posts from a page called KBMER who are graffiti artists. The first post was of a blue 350Z painted in an Initial D style and it really caught my eye. A few more cars followed including an NB Miata, Civic and an RX7 FC, these guys feature darker patches for shadows/shading and made it look more realistic. My issue was, I didn't want to commit to painting the car incase I didnt like it. So i purchased some 12mm pin strip vinyl from work and gave it a go. I posted the photos on Social Media and the comments were very positive with a few suggestions. I left the pin strip on the car to see what it would look like with the door boards and I think I can pull it off KBMBER uses ink markers to create the lines and the whole car is then clear coated. Again, clear coating the car is a large task for a drive way build, plus theres no going back. I'll stick with the vinyl for now and see how it goes. The RR weekender showed at least two more cars in that style (pics 'borrowed' by other RR users): That style is appealing to me although it might be as short living and done to death soon like sticker bombing or rat look. So please keep it cooking while it's hot for a while and contribute what You know and what You find or what You've got, please!

Looks to be a current TikToker trend as 'Anime style' Looks really interesting on the blue Micra with the extra effort put into shading & other colours. Can't say I like it when it loos like lots of insulation tape holding pieces on... I definitely prefer it with several colours like black line work with a white, and/or lighter shade as a highlighter adding 'shine'.

Thanks for that imput 79cord . A quick google search seems to associate the term anime style more with more or less huge print wraps?

There was also this E39 at the Weekender with a manga style paint job When on monochrome cars, they also make me think of the Take on Me music video 😅

MUCH better seeing horizontal 'speed' lines. The vertical lines do my head in!

I think this is the fastest I've ever seen a style go from "omg that's epic" to "that looks naff". AFAIK it was a Russian or similar guy that did it first and it was pretty incredible, then seems to have gone downhill fast. As soon as it looks like a real car it loses impact fast.

Personally in not a fan of this trend, but I've seen afew cars like this done by one guy who seems to nail it. It's probably one of those things that has to be done right by someone with the right eye for what their doing and a certain amount of artistic ability. You can't just slap it on and expect it to look wow.

Never seen it before but for me the best executed car so far is the white MX5 followed by the blue K11 micra. Micra looks like it's had the right attention to the right details but the MX5 momentarily fooled my brain into thinking it was a rendering.

As mentioned above it seems alot of inspiration is taken from initial d. Which shows it does have to be done right to look right. Other pics of models gave me an idea to do it with a couple of hotwheels, but whilst I'm quite good at making stuff and painting stuff, I can't draw for toffee so I doubt I'd make a decent job of it. The best example I can find of it is this ..which is neither a picture or render, or even a real car, it's a model, and imo is quite incredible. Probably also shows that a photo needs to be taken at the right angle to really show it off.

Yes, it really needs to be treated artisticly as a sketch of the car, highlighting shapes, perhaps doubling up in error or emphasis. I think the vertical lines suggest scuff and scrapes or vibration (or even cruumpled paper) and should be used with restraint.
Also like the white BMW.

This cropped back up on Instagram, which is the first one I saw with that style of paint, probably a couple of years ago by a graffiti paint guy I follow, who was possibly the first person to do that paint style out of Florida somewhere (not sure where the Russian memory came from). Seemed to go viral a few months back. http://instagram.com/p/Ci9Knp7MIqK
