SOLD
I’m reluctantly selling my Golf 1.8 CL Auto which I purchased last month as I’ve decided to get laser eye surgery and need to pay for it somehow!
Good points:
1. Genuine 50k miles backed up by receipts. Engine was replaced by VW in 1995 under warranty at 23531 miles due to oil issues. Subsequently the new cluster failed at 24948 miles in 2012. The car has only done 1800 miles since then (500 by me in the last month).Cambelt was replaced immediately prior to my purchase at the start of May this year.
2. Car is in FANTASTIC condition for the year apart from a couple of minor cosmetic issues mentioned in the bad points below. ZERO rust.
3. Auto box is amazingly smooth and engine pulls well through all the gears.
4. All 4 tyres in excellent condition, spare is legal.
5. MOT’d until April 2024
6. 3 keys
7. Costs me £151 a year to insure fully comp (as a regular car, not classic).
8. I purchased the car off a VW collector and immediately prior to my purchase it had the following:
2 new wheel cylinders,
Cambelt kit
Aux belt
PAS belt
All new filters, wiper blades
Full service.
Gearbox removed to replace crank seal
I have subsequently spent £500 myself replacing both rear shocks and sorting a small oil leak.
Bad points (of which there aren’t many!)
1. Car is sometimes (very slightly) lumpy when starting from cold but this is only for 10-20 seconds or so and is easily fixed by revving the engine. Once you put your foot down for a couple of seconds the issue goes away and does not come back. Probably because it has only done 1800 miles in the last 11 years!
2. CAT C. Reading the paperwork this was due to being vandalised, rather than an accident. The car was fully resprayed in 2009 as a result.
3. As mentioned the car is in great condition considering it’s 30 years old this month. Only issues are some lacquer peel on the roof and on the fuel filler cap, and some paint missing on one of the wheels (please see photos). There’s a matching spare in perfect condition though so could easily be swapped.
4. The foam inside all of the air vents had rotted and gone sticky. I’ve removed the vast majority of this however there is obviously some more further in I can’t get to as occasionally a piece will fly out if you have the blowers on max!
5. Boot carpet is coming away from the back of the rear seats. I guess it could easily be glued back on?
That’s it, you won’t find a better one in my opinion and I’d drive up to the Highlands in it tomorrow if I had to. Trouble free motoring, no electronics to go wrong, keep fit windows and the original blaupunkt tape deck. It’s a shame to sell but my laser eye surgery is going to cost 5k and I can’t justify keeping it. It owes me £1500. I’d like £1300 for it which I think is an absolute steal.
Car is in Harrogate and I’d welcome you to come and have a look at it.
